Okay guys, I know you'll just give me the "It's just Pokemon bullshit" excuse, but I want to talk about this.

I just beat AZ at the end of the main campaign, and wow. Those were some good visuals, music, and emotions for a fucking Pokemon game. Bravo Masuda.

It was actually really bad, OP. Gamefreak tried to shove in forced feels into the game at every chance. I had a hard time feeling anything for a character that had almost zero effect on the plot (as in, you could completely remove him from the game (not backstory) and nothing would change) and only showed up two times before. Interesting character, zero development, and that entire scene was just awkward.

This. It felt like that was the ending for a different game. The entire in game plot was trash and then they add this 3d looking good ending practically forcing it in. If AZ was involved and the in game story had more work put into it might have been good. Then seeing the 4 forced friends at the end being on stage with you also felt shit. I mean fine Shauna and the rival could be there but not the other 2 fags.

He did diddly shit in the plot. The backstory? Yeah, he's the one who created the ultimate weapon. Current-day? You could have just let him be an unnamed king and had Lysandre find the key in some secret grotto protected by a pokemon. He didn't need to be in there. Removing him would have 0 impact.

For a pokemon game that put in a central plot while still showing the personalities of the other npc that you travel with, it was pretty good. they couldn't make THIS game around the plot of AZ but they showed that they are willing to commit to a full blown story. Maybe the next game will have another plot besides friendship and adventure!...

I'm thinking (read:hoping) there'll be a bigger focus on him in Z.
There are still a lot of mysteries surrounding Parfum Palace. AZ being the ancient king, he might tie into that if they turn out to be significant.

Black and White did some really interesting things, and that's an honest opinion considering I might be called a nostalgiafag for R/B G/S.

Though Team Plasma felt underdeveloped, N's character was marvelous. He was prince raised in a eerie, captive environment lead to believe his vision was his own and what he was doing was right under the control of a manipulative Religious leader.

Plus, the final battle taking place AFTER the Pokemon league was pretty damn intense.

Honestly, it might have had the best story out of the entire series.

That being said, the story in X/Y felt tacked on. The focus this time was on taking an adventure with your friends. They were going for the traditional JRPG feeling, where you have a cast of characters who interact throughout the journey and gain an attachment to (and they had a love interest to boot, unfortunately it wasn't the one most people wanted). However, the confrontation with Team Flare was INCREDIBLY underdeveloped. Lysander's motives could've been corrected had the Prof given him like five more sentences, the Prof says it himself.

It felt... too clean and simple as opposed to the complexity Black and White had, and that was it's downfall.

Sidenote: I am pretty disappointed with the post-game content. Especially since it has the least since R/B. I still think it's excellent and the fact that it is a complete 3D world and the battles are stadium style still give me a massive boner.

This is the type of shit you should expand on in the main plot or even a proper sidequest, not just shove off on some dialogue for an out of the way NPC most people will probably never even bother to talk to or find. You had a thing there, do something with it.

Personally I liked XY's plot more than BW's, only because it felt less stiff. BW felt like it had been very poorly translated, which really hampered the writing. BW definitely had more to it in the end, but everything came off even more stiff and forced to me. XY had more potential as well if you ask me, and its main issue is that it squandered that potential.

Honestly I thought it was ridiculous. I appreciate the further attempt at a storyline but there was no development to support all of the plot points, so they were completely empty and shoved down your throat.

I remember one of the leakers (the ones who actually bought the game when it got leaked in Canada) saying that there was an actual romance sideplot with Shauna. I was a bit disappointed when I found out that didn't end up happening. Not a waifufaggot but it would have been interesting to see GF handle something like that.

i felt that X/Y's plot was subtle at times, for a fucking Pokemon game. The entire backstory of the region is relayed through word of mouth in an admittedly gorgeous palace, AZ's entire story makes more sense if you read throwaway NPC dialogue, the motivations of team flare is a bit more understated, some of your friends have interesting backstories (just look at Trevor and Calem/Serena, their character arcs are pretty deeply buried in irrelevant text) that aren't spelled out in front of you...

X/Y definitely needs a lot more polish, but I appreciate the attempt at more exposition delivered this way and not giant plot dumps by the villain/professor. Although that definitely still exists.

I'm glad someone else has said this. Gen 6 tells a lot of its story through exploration (well, as much as obsessively talking to NPCs can be considered exploration at least), and honestly that's how a video game should tell its story. It's a storytelling method that Pokemon hasn't done since Gen 2, and it's a good thing that they're trying it out for Gen 6.

they had some of it in gen iv, but Platinum had that meeting with you, your rival, and prof. rowan to explain all the shit about the legendaries and the main plot.

Most of the understated shit is usually post-game/enemy leader backstories, but for some reason this gen had more of that kind of exposition for everyone.

To have a great story a game should tell as much of the story as possible through gameplay and mechanics, in otherwords just have the player do it.
Failing that, showing it with cutscenes is acceptable if not overused.
Saying it through text is the worst method, it's far less powerful than what the medium is capable of.

That said, Pokemon is NOT the best format for telling a story through gameplay or even cutscenes, but it could be much better if they at least tried to in the cases where it is possible.

Not really. It still wasn't great, but the dialogue was leaps and bounds over the Gen V games, which were just plain awful with how stiff and unnatural it felt if you ask me. DPPt were fine though.

The plot itself though did feel shoved in. They did try to tell the story a good deal through NPC's and such, as said before, but what they did tell through that felt like it didn't get nearly enough depth.

You take a second, then get right back into playing.
It was awkward, and didn't feel planned out. It's sad because there's so much more we could've learned about King Arizona.
Everything just had a vague tone to it.
