And yet he never decided to ask the mega evolution elder, or the champion who uses a mega pokemon?

I know pokemon isn't known for the plot, but there seems to be a lot of shit in this game that just plain old doesn't make sense.

But surely he could have talked to him about what the deal with mega evolution was.

I mean, I get that it was a flimsy framing device designed to get you out into the region and to introduce megas, but they could have handled it so much better.

Just because it's so easy for the player to mega-evolve, doesn't mean that in their universe it would be easy.
It's almost like trying to explain some of the unexplainable questions in real life. Sycamore is attempting to discover what the power of Mega-evolution is. And of course he understands that it takes a megastone and a mega ring, but in their world there is a lot more to it. He's trying to understand why it happens, not how it happens.
tl;dr Sycamore knows his shit but wants to learn more.
