Type coverage is key. Shit, I spent part of White using Vanilluxe because it could slay Dragons, at least until I got to Victory Road, caught a Deino, and started grinding until it was a level 64 Hydreigon (the Ghetsis-Slayer!). But for my permanent party members, they tend to be things I like the look of while also having good typings (read: Steel with EVERYTHING). and half-decent offensive movesets for in-game action. Bisharp is the best possible example of that, as I've pretty much constantly had one on my team every game since White, probably my favorite non-Legendary ever, and often I can have four different types represented in its moveset (usually Iron Head/Night Slash/Brick Break/X-Scissor). I don't play competitively, though.
