Oh damn I'm going to be sure to pick up those cards. I might get shit for this, but the Emboar line is one of my favorites. This might sound pretty strange, but I've played every game except Platinum and Diamond, and Emboar is the first fire type I have ever used.

Last gen, I picked Oshawott in both Black, and White 2 and due to its so-called "Japanese" and "Samurai" design basis, I named my team after Sengoku-era figures (i.e., the characters in Pokemon Conquest, basically). I distinctly remember my Lilligant being Okuni, due to her founding kabuki and Lilligant being a dancer and all that. Samurott was Masamune, if only because Dewott's dual-wielding distinctly reminded me of Masamune from Sengoku Basara.

This gen I named my team mostly after famous Pokemon characters (Venusaur was Oak, Gardevoir was Sabrina), except for Tyrantrum which I named John... named after, well, John Hammond.

i try not to use references, as i find them to be very unoriginal and cliché. Mostly struggle with myself when it comes down to think of a nickname, so i just punch the keyboard with my eyes closed, add some vowels, and if i dont like how it sounds i do it again.

Some examples are
Valka, the Weavile
Ronzo, the Cacturne

Or i just simply use joke nicknames like when i named my male Jellycent Mostaza Mustard because it reminded me of Colonel Mustard or when i named my Hochcrow Juancho because it looked Mexian as fuck.
