I think doubles is the appropriate format for Pokemon; a LOT of mons are either great in a support capacity or with some support that aren't usable alone in singles. It's certainly true that the list of viable mons is wider in doubles, and that's something.
One thing I dislike is how FAST doubles goes, though. You see a lot of DisQuake (this gen it will be BoomQuake, with Noivern and a Soundproof/Ghost as the EQer) and it just generally goes by so fast.
Granted that's partially owing to the 4-mon format and the fact that Item Clause prevents Leftovering on every damn thing, and also the fact that level 50 is just a faster meta... I think Smogon Doubles (which is Smogon 6v6 singles rules but with doubles) is promising.
One thing that is kind of sad about doubles, though Gen V obviously exacerbated it, is it's definitely a hyperoffensive meta. There's not a lot of countering, not a lot of tanking, and essentially ZERO stall. It's all hit hit hit hit.
Gen VI singles is definitely the reign of bulky offense, though, which is how Pokemon SHOULD be played, so hopefully some of that bulky playstyle will seep into the doubles meta and we'll see a doubles format that's about dealing with OTHER teams, rather than just building your team around strong synergistic pairs.
