The gen addressed some problems similar to those addressed by XY, but it frequently answered them in really weird ways that left things feeling very messy. The physical/special split was perfect, but it occurred alongside sloppy fixes like rounding out the roster with the pokeradar, arbitrary evolution requirements that placed odd demands on future games, and statbuffing old low-tier mons by giving them ugly, overdesigned evolutions.
But overall I still felt like it made more sense than RSE, which in spite of its many qualities still kind of rubs me the wrong way. Something about the monster designs feels just very different from the rest of the series up to that point. As of late I've gotten used to it, but back then it was very jarring.
