There are people out there who spend hundreds of hours playing a children's RPG "competitively".

The problem is that the metagame in general is absolutely terrible, and although Smogon has good intentions, they really can't do much to fix it. Competitive multiplayer in Pokemon simply isn't fun and the people who try to tell you it is are lying to themselves.
