GF is a shitty gamedev company and we also all know it.
Except those in denial or just uneducated about videogames or just too young to really form an opinion.
This said, pokemon could be very easily competitive if only GF would invest time and resources into making it so.
Just look at LoL or DOTA2.
Pokemon is actually very simial to those games, both have a large pool of characters that fight against each other, the real difference is that pokemon uses a "classic" rpg fight mode, the other a RTS one.
The gameplay set doesn't really matter, what matters is the balancement and the way the player can get into the competitive online.
So, if GF spent time and resources into continous balancement (and we are talking about following the game constantly, adding, nerfing and buffing all the time etc.) and made things easier for those that want to be competitive instead of making people wasting 100 hours riding their bikes hatching 300 eggs then we could very easily have a new great ESPORT.
But why would GF ever do that?
The real purpose of GF is to push the franchise. They never really cared about the game. They just want to exploit kids and autistic manchildren as much as possible. It worked so well all these years, I doubt things will ever change.
All in all pokemon was, is and it will probably always be a huge wasted potential.
