Glad you asked! They're extremely rare variations of pokemon with different color pallets. There's about a 1/8000 chance of encountering them in the wild randomly without any RNG manipulation or methods that increase your chance of encountering one, so it isn't uncommon for some players to have never seen one before despite having played one or more games.
>1/8000 is too high! How do I get one easily?
The most common methods are the Masuda Method, Shiny Fishing, and PokeRadar Chaining, however there seems to be a higher chance of finding shinies in the Friend Safari as well. The three aforementioned methods are covered in the guides section below.
>What's the Masuda Method?
Named after Junichi Masuda, one of Diamond/Pearl's developers, programmed a little something special into the games that increases the shiny rate when breeding under certain conditions. Simply, a pokemon traded from a foreign country should be breeded with a pokemon from your cartridge. This increases the rate of an egg containing a shiny by 4x in DPPt, and 5x in prior games. See the guide below for more details.
>What's a shiny charm?
An item in Gen V that increases your chances of finding a shiny. 1/2730 in the wild, and 1/1024 when using the Masuda Method. It's unknown if this will be able to be traded over to Gen VI games with the PokeBank.
>Is the shiny rate higher in the Friend Safari?
The majority of /vp/ thinks this is true, but there hasn't been a datamine of the X/Y ROMs so nobody can say for sure.

See the GFShinyGuide link in OP. While far easier to find and catch than with the other methods, the pool of available pokemon attainable from fishing is small, and because they much easier to catch, they aren't valued as high as other non-fishable shiny pokemon. Don't fret, you can usually throw a fishing shiny up on the GTS and get most any non-shiny pokemon for it. No hard shiny:normal fish ratios yet, but a rough estimate brings it around 1/200 on average at maximum probability.
>What is chaining?
When using the Pokeradar under extremely certain circumstances, one can increase their probability of encountering a shiny in grass. This is the more tricky method of the three, as it requires that you follow certain rules in order not to break your "chain" or "streak". The higher your chain, the more likely it is that you'll encounter a shiny. See the guide in OP for more details.

It's day 4 of breeding for 5 IV bold shiny Eevee. I've went through boxes upon boxes. I don't know what i'm doing wrong. Can shinies even be perfect? Using a japanese Eevee with 5 IV and a destiny knot with a regular Eevee with 5 IV and an everstone.

Yeah whatever they did to the shiny rates in X & Y is ridiculous. There's no doubt they're higher. 100 hours in Y, and about 800 hours in all my Gen. 4 games combined. That's not including Gen. 2 and 3.

If it's anything like Gen. 4, it keeps going. The chain ends after you run away or walk out of the grass however. So either KO the Pokemon or catch it to continue the chain.

Not sure if I understand but: If you encounter a shiny during a chain, you can catch it and continue your chain uninterrupted. That's why sometimes people come out with 8 shinies during a single chain. Remember though once you encounter a different pokemon then you're trying to encounter (ie. chaining for Arbok, run into a Goodra) then the chain is broken.

You can find both in both games. One of them only appears in hordes though (I think it's Nidoran M/F), like you can only find Plusle in a horde in Y.

So, I was breeding Tyrunts trying to get a jolly one to replace one of the parents with to breed solely jolly ones, and I get a Shiny Relaxed Tyrunt. If I use this as a parent, will it increase the likelihood of shiny offspring? I know next to nothing about shiny mechanics. Just bummed it had to be a speed- natured one or I'd probably use it. I hatched the egg in the Friend Safari, by the way (not sure if it was pre-determined to be shiny upon egg pickup, or if it turned shiny from hatching in there).

This is my story of attempting to get a decent shiny Gastly/Gengar.

So I started out nonsensically breeding a Gastly with a Jap Ditto to try and get a shiny, after 3 days of no luck I decided to delve further into my autism by getting the "best nature" for my Gastly. I'm not on par with Brock in terms of breeding so I did not have the wits to /vp/ and ask what was the best nature for Gastly.

Instead I just looked at the eggs that already hatched looked at their stats and decided on what stat was highlighted in blue believing that that nature benefits that stat. Long story short I chose Adamant as the nature for my babies. One day later I get a shiny Gastly, I check at the IV guy and he tells me it has perfect iv's in Speed, great! I post on /vp/ and to my demise im laughed at since his nature is Adamant. I learn the error of my ways and go on to breed another Gastly with timid nature. Today my dreams came true, a timid shiny gastly.

I fucking blitz it over to the iv guy. Perfect iv's in attack and nothing else. Hoping he would have close to 31 in other stats I checked and this is what I get.

/vp/ I don't know how much more of this I can take. I lost track of the box count after I filled pc and continuously wonder traded a dozen or so boxes. All I know is that it's been about 70 hours of Masuda Method because of play time. I don't even like bergmite's shiny sprite, but I found out 15 boxes in. I thought "well I'm already this far. I personally caught 5, which were a Dragonair, Charizard(still have), Espurr, Gabite, Ponyta(DS died and it was lost, sadly).

Something I enjoy more than almost anything else is making other people happy. I generally don't put a giant effort forth to get shinies for other people, but if I run across one I don't particularly want, I'll normally just give it away instead of trying for something of equal value, just because I know how happy it makes the recipient.

Question guys.

I have a shiny gastly, it has decent IVs, none of them too low, and a perfect IV in special defense, which isn't too terrible.

Only thing is, it's nature decreases speed. Is speed really that important for Gengar? Would EV training it make up for the nature? I really want to use it.

Any ideas?

You don't have a lot of Defense, or HP. Your SpA is good, but you lose to things you normally would kill because of your lower speed. It's not the end of the world, though.
It's just not great when your nature hinders your best stat.

You'll want to train speed, but really, it's up to you. You're not going to be tanking much unless you max your HP and defenses, but then you wont be killing anything.
