Rate a gen by their music.

Gen IV > V > ii > i > vi = iii

I prefer the jazzy feel of gen 4. Gen 5's battle themes were pretty great, 2 was really nice and the music overall was somewhat relaxing.

Gen 5 had the best, most developed music, and gen 4 had some beautiful pieces.

Gen 3, excluding soundfonts and trumpets, had some excellent thematic and moody songs.

Gen 6 had some excellent music, but then had a lot of forgettable music, a first for me in Pokemon, which is why it's really hard to place. Shit like Anistar, the remixes of old themes, and the Pokeball Factory were topnotch, but there were a lot of generic pieces as well.

Gen 1 also has advantage of some really nostalgic pieces along with the best battle music in the series (partly due to medium, they couldn't use a lot of harmonies so they had to resort to crazy rhythms).

Two was alright, although got really good remixes in gen 4.

Wow, I completely agree about 6th gen.
Those were probably the best pieces in the game. The gym leader battle music was beyond terrible for me.

I think Gen IV is good enough to the point I don't even care to rank the rest. It beats them all as far as consistency goes, as other games only tend to have good tracks in certain areas. For instance, I think Gen III had the best victory road, Gen II for Rival, and Gen VI has some good... uh, you know, those little jingles different trainers have before fights.

Regardless, I think Gen IV beats them all in totality. Best champion music, too:

That's what I'm talking about. If they had kept the more rhytmatic style of the previous games with the new soundfonts, it would have been pants-shittingly good.

Mystery dungeon actually made a really, really, really good transition to the 3DS, it's sad that XY didn't make as complete a move.

One of the only Gen 6 songs I don't like is the fucking default trainer battle music. The wild encounter music is a close second. Almost everything else (yes, including the gym leader and E4 themes) I really enjoyed. Coumarine is my favorite by far, I wanna make that my alarm for the mornings.

Also Ghetsis and final N had some of the best boss/battle music in the games. So very different and intense while conveying the mood of the situation perfectly.

Colress had a rad battle theme as well.

For some reason listening to this makes me imagine myself as an old man when games have progressed and kids dont care for pokemon anymore. I sit down and play my ancient DS and remember the times I had playing gens 1-6.

The soundtrack was half of the reason Sinnoh was such a snooze-fest. Only a handful of pieces were proactively engaging, but most reeked of "ehh I didn't know what to do with the composition here" syndrome.

I love most of the battle music, but the trainer theme was a disappointment.

I loved the music in DPPt and BW2, so it's usually difficult to choose a favorite. Gens III and II both had pretty good soundtracks (dat Lance/Red battle music, dat Mt Pyre Peak theme) and I'm kind of neutral to gens VI and I. I don't really dislike any soundtrack.

Usually whenever I see someone praising Gen 4 it's either just saying that Platinum fixed a lot of DP's fuckups or talking about HGSS

I don't usually see them show up in any particular area though, like how Gen 5 fans pop up mostly in story threads, Gen 1 and 3 shitfling at each other about everything, and Gen 2 talks about muh postgame

I'm an idort though since I like and hate things about every gen so I see all of you as shitflingers
