Glad you asked! They're extremely rare variations of pokemon with different color pallets. There's about a 1/8000 chance of encountering them in the wild randomly without any RNG manipulation or methods that increase your chance of encountering one, so it isn't uncommon for some players to have never seen one before despite having played one or more games.
>1/8000 is too high! How do I get one easily?
The most common methods are the Masuda Method, Shiny Fishing, and PokeRadar Chaining, however there seems to be a higher chance of finding shinies in the Friend Safari as well. The three aforementioned methods are covered in the guides section in OP.
>What's the Masuda Method?
Named after Junichi Masuda, one of Diamond/Pearl's developers, programmed a little something special into the games that increases the shiny rate when breeding under certain conditions. Simply, a pokemon traded from a foreign country should be breeded with a pokemon from your cartridge. This increases the rate of an egg containing a shiny by 4x in DPPt, and 5x in prior games. See the guide in OP for more details.
>What's a shiny charm?
An item in Gen V that increases your chances of finding a shiny. 1/2730 in the wild, and 1/1024 when using the Masuda Method. It's unknown if this will be able to be traded over to Gen VI games with the PokeBank.
>Is the shiny rate higher in the Friend Safari?
The majority of /vp/ thinks this is true, but there hasn't been a datamine of the X/Y ROMs so nobody can say for sure.

See the GFShinyGuide link in OP. While far easier to find and catch than with the other methods, the pool of available pokemon attainable from fishing is small, and because they much easier to catch, they aren't valued as high as other non-fishable shiny pokemon. Don't fret, you can usually throw a fishing shiny up on the GTS and get most any non-shiny pokemon for it. No hard shiny:normal fish ratios yet, but a rough estimate brings it around 1/200 on average at maximum probability.

When using the Pokeradar under extremely certain circumstances, one can increase their probability of encountering a shiny in grass. This is the more tricky method of the three, as it requires that you follow certain rules in order not to break your "chain" or "streak". So I really wanted a Shiny Haxorus, so I did friend safari runs for a few hours and managed to get 2 Shiny Fraxure. Unfortunately they were both horribly natured and IVd, despite using Synchronize. I decided to Masuda method and sure enough, I got a Shiny Axew with the correct nature, good IVs, and the correct ability in only 15 eggs. I think they're drawn to me.

Got six shinies. Two from MM and four from FS.

Right now I am breeding Eevees like mad to get 5IV Eevees before I try to get a shiny for every Eeveelution.

I feel like I'm going to be at this a while, especially since Eevees only have a 12.5% of being female and none of the females I breed ever seem to get more than three perfect IVs.

Lots and lots of breeding with one of the pokemon holding a Destiny Knot.

Basically every pokemon has a set of IVs: One for every stat and each value is between 0 and 31 with 0 being shit and 31 being perfect.

Normally a pokemon only inherits three IVs from its parents, like two from one and one from the other. The rest are randomized.

Destiney Knot allows for you to pass on five of these values, (4 from one, 1 from the other or 2 from one, three from the other, etc.) and only one value is randomized.

You can check the IVs of pokemon in Kiloud City Pokemon Center where there is a person who will rate them and tell you which are strongest and which are shit. If the pokemon has one or more stats with 31 IVs then he will say that stats like those simply can't be beat.

Also, Friend Safari Pokemon are guaranteed to have AT LEAST two perfect IVs.

If you have access to a Cacturne Safari, just catch like 16 Cacturnes, take them to the Judge and mark their IV's with the the little symbols they give you.
Then breed a good female with a good male and take their best children and rinse and repeat.
That's how I do it.

How are people finding so many shinies in friend safari? I wandered around for a few hours today trying to nab myself a shiny Bisharp and found absolutely nothing. Is there something I'm missing? Should I not be running away from battles or something?

What I would reply to you is do you really need it? Is speed a part of your Cacneas make-up? Is special attack, or physical attack (which is built for better)?

The defenses being 31 never hurts.

Beyond that, breeding lots and lots of Ditto-spawned pairs of cacneas, selectively breeding them to get the two EV traits from the Ditto parents until you get the all stats can't be beat message is the easiest way to do it currently.

got fed up with everyone saying shiny rate increased when i couldn't find any. so i learnt how to chain.
Chaining seems to have a lower chance than in gen IV because even with constant resets i only got one and that was way after reaching a chain of 40.

Make sure you can see all 3 pokemon in their friend safari since this activates hidden abilities and I'd guess it also activates increased shiny rate. Just keep running in friend safari. I've found some 20 minutes apart, others I've had hours apart. But they always show up.

Like I said in my previous post, I'd really recommend just MMing. Because the nature and IV's wont be right unless you get lucky. With MMing, you have more control over it. Unless you just want the shiny for kicks and aren't gonna really use it on your team.

They're what makes a pokemon "special", your pokemon will never be the exact same as someone elses pokemon, hence the name Individual Values.
Unfortunately, when it comes to competitive battling, "special" just doesn't cut it, and there is an obvious reason for that.

Unless they have the same IVs. Face it, it's a pointless system that just makes forming a competitive team needlessly complicated and tedious. The only people that care about IVs are competitive battlers and they just want perfect mons so there's really no point.

I actually agree with this IVs just make a barrier for newcomers who actually want to get into Pokemon battling. EVs serve a purpose in that you can fine tune your Pokemon to your liking. Whereas the IV system is almost entirely pointless.

That's the thing, originally, it was meant to be an invisible factor that differentiated your pokemon from someone elses pokemon.
I agree that it's a relic of the older generations that, now, could be done away with.
But the point still stands that they serve as a way to make 2 pokemon stand out from each other, which is their intended purpose.

That's the gist of it, since supposedly the Safari has a better shiny rate than the normal shiny rate.

Unfortunately, you still have to deal with random natures/IV's. Despite having Modest Synchro as lead, my Manec came out to be hardy in the end. Least it has max Def/Spe so still somewhat usable, and still special to me.

But, consider your options:

>Breeding - Best possible way to get best stats/nature/ability, but can take in-between 1, 30, 70, or even 100+ boxes.

I find shinies to be far more common in x/y than the previous generations. The only shiny I'd ever found in previous generations was a shiny giratina in diamond, but in this I've found 2 shinies in the wild without any sort of shiny hunting method and hatched a shiny charmander through matsuda method within the first 20 eggs. It's possible it has something to do with tipping, I've tipped at least 100 times so far.

First time trying to Pokeradar myself a shiny, I've been following the /vp/ guide and trying it out on Altaria and Scyther, but my question is this;

When you walk out the grass to reset the grass shakes to try for a better one, is there a set number of times you can do this before it breaks your chain?

Just collect them and shit because they're rare. I guess they're not as rare in this generation but maybe that will change eventually. But seriously, what do you do with them, why would someone want to trade their Lugia for a shiny Oddish or something like that?

aaaand i guess i could part with shiny Azurill (wild caught so it has 3 IV); got that one on the GTS so I can't rename it. Quiet & huge power

Ugh, reset for 40 minutes past that and nothing else. I think catching shinies might reset the odds this generation. It doesn't kill the chain for sure but I think it might just set you back to 1 or 0. Odds of a shiny patch each reset should be something ridiculous like 1/40 after the cap.
