Questions on Breeding IV's

So in gen 6 I plan to do a lot of breeding, and I know how to breed natures/moves/abilities (all fairly simple), but I don't quite get how IVs work. I know Destiny Knot helps passing them down, but I am not 100% sure on the specifics.

Slightly related, if I wanted to breed a shiny with perfect IVs, how would I do that? From my understanding, I would need a foreign ditto that would have perfect IVs itself, and I can't imagine how I would get my hands on one.

Actually, do people usually breed all six IVs, or just get 5 and call it good? I seem to have heard something to that effect.

4-5 perfect IVs is what most people shoot for because most pokes will have at least one stat that isn't important for them anyway.

FE: A Reuniclus is never to going to be particularly fast even if you gave it a speed nature and maxed Speed EV, so you can let it slide if it has a subpar speed since it likes to play in Ruse Room anyway

Generally what you do is catch a ton of the same poke in Friend Safaris, so that you get wide variety of perfect IVs to pass along.

Say you started with with a male Wartortle with perfect HP and Special Attack, and a female with perfect Defense and Special Defense

You put a Destiny Knot on one, which guarantees that five random stats from the parents will pass on. They have a daughter with perfect HP, Defense and Special defense.

You then take the mom out of the day care and put the newborn Squirtle in so her own father can fuck her and produce even more genetically superior offspring. They have a son with perfect HP, Special Attack and Attack. Since he has more perfect stats to pass along than the original Wartortle, you would now put your Squirtle's brother/son in to continue the chain, swapping the destiny knot as needed

You continue this chain of incestuous genetic engineering until a poke with the stats most important to it is produced

This, except you ALSO want the final breeding pair to be one with a foreign Pokemon. So, what you ideally want, is a 5 IV parent with ANY nature from a foreign region, to boost the chance via masuda method.

By the way, I hope you like holding the D-pad. Perfect IV shinies are kind of impractical to get.

Regarding this, when it comes to Egg Moves (Tyrunt with the Elemental fang attacks, for example), at which point would I toss in the male Arbok? Once I have a Tyrunt with the fangs, can he pass down the fangs, or do I have to keep a non-IV trained Arbok in the mix, hoping for the best each time (with Egg Moves and IVs being ultimately mutually exclusive goals)?

The Fangrunt can pass the moves, yeah. Once theyre in the gene pool they'll always be passed on so long as there aren't more than four passable moves between the parents

those helped a lot. I knew friend safari pokemon could have hidden abilities, but I did not know they would have 2 hidden IVs. Is that a guaranteed thing under any circumstance, or does it require being online, like hidden abilities.

Any circumstance, the third pokemon requires only that you discover it while both are online, but the pokemon in there always have 2 random 31 IV. And also sometimes hidden abilities

Nah use the stylus.

Put the screen at a 90 degree angle.

Jam the pen in to the analogue stick and rest the pen against the top screen. Works fine.

I will try to explain it OP because I had trouble with this too and 99% of the guides are total shit written by idiots.

Destiny Knot passes down FIVE IVs from EACH Pokémon. So if you have a Pokémon with four perfect IVs and a Pokémon with three perfect IVs you put Destiny Knot on the one with four perfect IVs hoping that it passes down all the good ones.

Of course this means it can fuck up and you'll get a Pokémon with like one two good IVs but that's pretty rare.

I actually have a question about this. There are 6 stats. Destiny Knot ensures 5 IVs get passed. So how come, when I have a Pokemon with 4 perfect IVs, with a destiny know, a child can be born with just one? Wouldn't I be guaranteed at least 2?

Reuniclus is actually kind of an awkward example as you ideally you need 0 Speed IVs and getting absolute 0 requires the same sort of RNG as IV breeding from previous gens.

If ANYONE has a 0 speed IV pokemon, for the love of god trade with me.

Am I correct in that Destiny Knot ensures 5 get passed down. Doesn't that mean there's only one IV that isn't passed down from that Pokemon?

Or does it work like this:

5 from Pokemon A. 3 from Pokemon B.

8 Stats overall. The game selects 6 from random from that?

I feel like I'm missing something here.

What the hell are you talking about.
It'll get 5 IVs from its parents as opposed to the 3 it gets by default.

You might end up getting 3 IVs of the father and 2 of the mother for example with the last one being random 0-31

Base Breeding, no items:

3 stats from EITHER Pokemon, at random. 3 random stats.

Breeding with Destiny Knot:

5 random stats from EITHER Parent. 1 random stat.

The only thing I don't know is whether there is a limit.
Say, would it be possible for the baby to get 5 IVs from the father, 0 from the mother and 1 random one?

To be honest I don't see why this was so difficult for people

"Destiny Knot takes 5 randomly selected IVs from both parents and randomises the sixth" was enough explanation for how I would get a perfect one, and i've never IV bred before.

It's all RNG, but over time you have opportunities to increase the odds in your favour

There's no guarantee, just probability.

More than a few times i've had two 3-perfect-IV parents in daycare and they've produced a 5-perfect-IV pokemon, pure luck basically allowing me to skip the final two steps.

It's the equivalent of having 10 cards and only being allowed to pick up 5.

Though from what I understand, a Destiny Knot would not choose the same stat twice from both parents, it would choose one or the other. So if you have two parents with perfect HP IVs, you are guaranteed perfect HP IVs unless the destiny knot chooses HP as the stat it will ignore.

Thanks for clearing it up. Seeing how the Destiny Knot went on ONE Pokemon, I didn't realize it was still randomizing the stats from both. I thought it was grabbing the 5 stats from the Pokemon that held it. I understand now. Thank you very much.

But seriously, am I doing something wrong here? Is it taking me extra long because I chose to breed something that has a low female rate, or am I just doing it wrong?

At the moment I'm breeding a male Eevee@Everstone with 5 IVs, with a female Eevee@Destiny Knot with Anticipation, with only 3 IVs in SpAtk, SpDef and Speed.

Am I just having amazingly shit luck that every Eevee with perfect IVs has the wrong ability or?

And with what another anon said earlier, if I do manage to hatch an Eevee of whatever gender with the right nature/IVs, I have a Lonely Jap Ditto with IVs in Attack and SpDef. Would I be able to MM and still get a 5 IV pokemon, or would I just be wasting my time?

Yeah it takes a lot longer to breed if the mtf ratio is fucked up. It took me about 6 hours to breed a flawless Greninja and I even used a flawless male Clawitzer as one of the parents from the start. I had about as much shit luck as you are experiencing right now so don't give up you'll get there eventually.

It doesn't, but I don't think that affects it. 1 out of 5 eggs I hatch has Run Away/Adaptability. Just can't believe that out of those eggs, the rest will have only 3-4 IVs and then the one with the wrong nature gets 5.

one thing to note is that, if breeding for 6 perfect ivs, you'll want to use a breeding pair with the same 5 perfect ivs - each stat can only be inherited from one parent, so this eliminates the possibility of inheriting 2 shit ivs and increases the chance of hatching a perfect pokemon to ~1/192 (1/6 chance of not inheriting the shit iv * 1/32 chance of the generated iv being 31)
