Glad you asked! They're extremely rare variations of pokemon with different color pallets. There's about a 1/8000 chance of encountering them in the wild randomly without any RNG manipulation or methods that increase your chance of encountering one, so it isn't uncommon for some players to have never seen one before despite having played one or more games.

The most common methods are the Masuda Method, Shiny Fishing, and PokeRadar Chaining, however there seems to be a higher chance of finding shinies in the Friend Safari as well. The three aforementioned methods are covered in the guides section in OP.
>What's the Masuda Method?
Named after Junichi Masuda, one of Diamond/Pearl's developers, programmed a little something special into the games that increases the shiny rate when breeding under certain conditions. Simply, a pokemon traded from a foreign country should be breeded with a pokemon from your cartridge. This increases the rate of an egg containing a shiny by 4x in DPPt, and 5x in prior games. See the guide in OP for more details.
>What's a shiny charm?
An item in Gen V that increases your chances of finding a shiny. 1/2730 in the wild, and 1/1024 when using the Masuda Method.
>Is the shiny rate higher in the Friend Safari?
The majority of /vp/ thinks this is true, but there hasn't been a datamine of the X/Y ROMs so nobody can say for sure.

See the GFShinyGuide link in OP. While far easier to find and catch than with the other methods, the pool of available pokemon attainable from fishing is small, and because they much easier to catch, they aren't valued as high as other non-fishable shiny pokemon. Don't fret, you can usually throw a fishing shiny up on the GTS and get most any non-shiny pokemon for it. No hard shiny:normal fish ratios yet, but a rough estimate brings it around 1/200 on average at maximum probability.
>What is chaining?
When using the Pokeradar under extremely certain circumstances, one can increase their probability of encountering a shiny in grass. This is the more tricky method of the three, as it requires that you follow certain rules in order not to break your "chain" or "streak". The higher your chain, the more likely it is that you'll encounter a shiny. See the guide in OP for more details.

Ok so if you're not believing the already visible information on shinies why does it matter to you in the slightest if its true or not, any more photos will just be fake to you because one person says its fake and you instantly believe them. Thats now how probability works.
Just because you hatch 1024 eggs doesn't mean you are going to get 1 shiny in that 1024. Each separate egg has a 1024 chance to be shiny so you can go through 2 million and not get anything.

Approaching my 20th box of MM hunting Beldum's. Pretty demoralizing but I still have a lot of hope.

I crunched to numbers and after 31.5 boxed I have about a 50% chance that I should have a shiny by then. What makes it worse is that I'm bredding with a Beldum (now Metagross ~lvl85) that has 6 perfect IV's. Since you have to do it with a (foreign) Ditto, which usually only has 2 perfect IV's (as mine do), the odds of getting a completely perfect Beldum is almost as small as getting a shiny itself so I think that's were all my luck has gone and will go.

It will all be worth when I crack that Silver beauty. First thing I'm going to do is EV train it with hordes and then level it up to level 100 in the Battle Chateau.

I've played this game for over 120 hours and my only shiny is a Lanturn which I chain fished so that doesn't count. My luck with shinies in previous games is almost non existant. I don't know what I'm doing with my life...

tl;dr Going for my first (and last) MM Beldum. 20 boxes in... no end in sight.

You can only breed a Beldum with a Ditto... as far as I know (i.e. not two Beldums because they are genderless). But either way how would that increase the odds of a shiny. I'm only really after the shiny itself and the IVs are a second though. I am breeding with a Japanese Dtto and have the Oval Charm so getting the eggs doesn't take two long (considering they are difference species).

Finally hatched him earlier today, after 33 boxes. Not going to evolve him yet, but he will eventually be a Wish Umbreon. I bred with a 4 IV foreign female and 5 some different IV male, but only got perfect stats in defense and special defense. Oh, well. At least they're most important.

Both of mine have been male. One had three IVS, the other four, but not where I needed them to be.
I'd try this new method of IV breeding, but unfortunately I dont' want to put my friend up to that, since he'd have to breed for me.

So everytime I've Masuda'd a shiny it's been in under 200 eggs from something in the same egg group/same species but one half foreign

But the two times I've tried with my jap ditto I've had nothing after some 800 + eggs

He should've done the math before he started, it's 12.5% female, so unless I'm doing my math wrong here on average you'll see 8 male shinies before 1 female. I agree with the other guy, using cute charm woulda been easier.
