I breezed through Gen III, actually.
But that's probably because I had played Gen I & II a lot before that.

In fact, I think most people will be biased to think the first gen they played had the hardest encounters, and they're right, of course.
It was their first contact with pokemon, after all.

I confess I played Gen III always prepared for a rival match at every new route so I over grinded and kept my pokemon healthy. (getting my ass handed to me by rival matches in gens I and II, I learned my lesson)

Brawly was easy as fuck. Sableye (or Swellow for Ruby peasants) laughs at everything

Whitney was tricky for the unprepared, but for the typical /vp/ autist that was stuck breeding/bug catching/etc in that city for hours, they should have an overleveled starter.

Emerald Tate and Lize can be tricky if you are underleveled and have the chicken starter instead of swampert master race, and you likely are underleveled if you go straight to the gym instead of surfing endlessly since Emerald should have been your second time through the region.

Sabrina in RB is tricky unless you picked master race Blastoise or caught both Snorlax or waited until after you completed fucking everything before facing her.

Cynthia is a bitch in Gen 4 and requires a specific lineup or overleveling.

The difficulty really comes in when they catch you off guard, while you were just exploring or training.

Misty's Gym battle always gave me trouble as a kid, probably because Starmie was one of the best pokemon in the entire game period because Psychics were overpowered that generation and Special Attack and Special Def were the same stat.

Barry's starter in that fight has laughably low stats. Like, his Torterra for instance has around 50 in every stat except health. I don't know why this is.

Yes. Meditite had Pure Power gen 3.

The only issue with Huge Power Azu in Gen 3 was Water was fully special pre-Gen 4's split, so had to rely on non-STAB moves (and no Aqua Jet) with it.

Overleveled Gogoat swept Siebold without much difficulty. Tanked all of Clawitzer's attacks while spamming Bulk Up, Horn Leech to get my HP back and OHKO Clawitzer. Gyarados' Ice Fang does next to no damage due to all the defense boosts, and all the attack boosts let Horn Leech one shot Gyarados. Starmie and Barbaracle couldn't do anything about it either.

For my team, Siebold was probably the easiest E4 member, considering that Gogoat was my superstar.

And almost all the ones I did lose were because I had a severely weakened or mostly fainted team. Hardest to me was Cynthia, and I still wrecked her on the second try because I properly leveled my team before trying again.

So true story, the first time I played Platinum was on my friend's ds and game. We were on a break at one of his grandparent's condos or whatever and I played it through without ever turning off or saving. I had lost touch with Pokemon and didn't know any gen 6 'mons. Pretty much just played on the charger most of the time.

I beat the E4 on the car ride back home, minutes before being dropped off at home and losing my entire run. I didn't lose to Cynthia, but god damn she had me sweating bullets. Man that was probably one of my top 3 gaming moments of all time.
