The only thing that's different is that the information is being strictly regulated. Nintendo actually had to step in and say "Nope, you can't publish this yet. If you do, we're going to shut down your ass."
There was already a whole ton of information leaked in the past, but Serebii and several other fansites have either refused to put them on their site, or put them on and later took them down.
There was some information like Inkay evolving into Malamar by holding your 3DS upside down. That was old news before the game was even released, but Serebii didn't put anything unless it was officially reported on Corocoro.
