The sundial is a giant meteorite that, like all of the various evo stones, effects Pokemon evolution. Diancie is the missing 'center' piece, a legendary entity born from the rock itself (rock/fairy) [might have connection to the moon, even.. as fairies seem to]
The meteorite is somehow connected to, and perhaps even spawned, the mega evolution stones. That's why you only find them in Kalos [so far]. This is also why the sundial, at a certain hour, allows you to find the resonant mega stones.
Other evo stones are similar meteorites.. fire, water, grass stones.. even the mossy rock, eviolite, everstone, etc.
As for the other two, no idea.
