I think affection is different from happiness. Try giving them some vitamins or taking them to the juice shoppe and see what happens. Also try the massage in Cy...Cyllage? I forget its name.

Give it the Soothe Bell and then use Pomeg or similar berries on it until it won't eat any more.

This is what the berry field is for. Plant the whole thing up with those berries so you don't have to worry about happiness evolution again.
