I've caught a shiny clawitzer, shiny clauncher that I gave to a friend with Y, and a shiny magikarp for nostalgia and shiny mega gyarados.
My first one took at least 120 something. I asked the chainfishing guy and he told me.
Put something with suction cups first in your party.

While I would rather not turn this into a le ebin redditheist argument, there is an overwhelming amount of scientific proof that disproves many "histories" and superstitions as described in most religious texts.

However, as there are thousands of people getting shinies from chain fishing, the burden of proof is on you. The chances of it being entirely coincidential is very slim.

Therefore, if you want to be right, it is your job to provide counter-evidence, as there is more than enough current evidence that says chain fishing does help get shinies.

I'm guessing anywhere you can fish works.

It seems to only increase the odds of shinies, so there's still some RNG going on. I've caught 2 shinies in roughly 30 minutes, 1 in about 10, 1 after about an hour, and 2 twice casting nonstop for no shinies, the last time even breaking the chain after forever from no fish even with Suction Cups ability.
