Best Wishes was meant to be a reset for the series so new viewers could get into the series just like how we did with the first season since BW is supposed to be a modern version of RB. Best Wishes sucks because of that exact reason, the writers took away anything special about the anime, shrunk and reset Ash down into this retarded son of a bitch and retconned episodes from the original series and reused them/re-did them in Best Wishes (i.e. Butterfree episode)
However, before Best Wishes, the writers legit tried after the original series was done. They needed a way to keep the viewers with them so they made the anime all action-packed, characters developed, movies had actual plots instead of "ASH IS THE SAVIOUR OF THE UNIVERSE" and shit felt like a real anime.
Anyone who says Ash and anyone else on the main cast didnt develop from the original series to the end of DP obviously didn't watch the anime past the first Pokemon League. Ash went from some young idiot who tried to catch a Pidgey with a bag into an elite trainer who ended up taking out two legendaries in the Semi-finals of his most prominent Pokemon League. Not only did the writers develop him into a mentor figure towards May, Max, and Dawn like many people wanted him to, but he also EVOLVED HIS POKEMON. Now that Best Wishes is finished and the producers have their viewers, the writers have shown that they're doing exactly what they did with AG and making the anime action-packed again. Hell, Ash isn't a dumbass like he was in BW and we're only 4 episodes in.
Anyone who wants to watch the anime should start with AG because that's where things actually started becoming interesting to watch. Skip BW because ABSOLUTELY NOTHING of importance occurs then besides Ash's Charizard not training in CV anymore.
Start at AG, then BF, then DP (which is god-tier), and then jump to XY
