haven't seen one of these at all, so lets make one.

Two questions from me:

1. What's your favourite PMD game? I dont hate sky in fact it's really good but I hate how they removed friend areas, I really liked seeing each pokemons area and what it looks like.

2. Is the new PMD really that casual and boring?

pmd red/blue had the best plots of any pokemon game ever. Time/darkness were good too. I never played any of the others, they looked much more casual and derivative.

Your horrible taste would have gave me polio if I didn't have a good immune system. The only thing not completely shit about red/blue's story line was the fugitive arc and that didn't even last two hours.

As much shit as Gates gets, it's the only good story (7/10 at the very most, it's definitely not great) the pokemon franchise has ever has because the characters were actually not that bad. Explorers isn't that good, but is improved heavily by the special episodes

Can someone explain to me why Gates was so bad?

I played Gates and I thought it was mediocre aside from the soundtrack (best in the franchise so far, but I have not played many spinoffs) and the story (by pokemon standards it was amazing. Not worth mentioning by non-pokemon standards though) and going by the general consensus, I picked up Explorers of Sky, but I'm finding it considerably more boring than Gates so far. Way worse story wise so far, and hunger isn't adding anything to the experience. Soundtrack is still great though.

Yeah no, Gates was weakest in every regard. Explorers and Rescue team both made me actually care about the characters, Gates was just...I didn't even care about my partner by the end of it.

As opposed to a bunch of walking catchphrases and a partner who is pretty much a selfish parasite? I admit I'm being generous to Gates's story, but it was better than Explorer's story and shits on Rescue Team's from the Eiffel Tower.

Grovyle: Stoic as fuck. If Grovyle shows little to no emotion, then how can I expect to show any emotion for him?

I have not played Sky though, do the characters receive better treatment in the special episodes?

Yes they do, there's even backstory to wigglytuff in a special episode where you play as him when he was a kid and why he wanted to become a exploration team/guild leader.

I can just buy an apple from the Kecleon Shop can't I? Seems like a really simple way to get round the problem. Although if there are 50+ floor dungeons, it'll probably not be that simple.

Now that actually sounds interesting. I didn't dislike Explorers of Darkness in spite of the story getting way too much credit (still much better than anything from the main series.) It was a decent game at the very least.

Would you recommend me getting Sky if I saw it for a cheap price? Or just watch footage of the episodes on youtube?

I'd agree with the first poster about Explorer's mains story getting too much credit, but the special episodes in Sky are far and away the best stories ever told in Pokemon; a vast improvement, especially the second and last episode. Almost worth the price alone if you already liked the gameplay if you ask me.

1. Explorers of Sky is my favorite, mainly because it's the first one I played and because it's the only side game I know of that has the second evolution of my favorite pokemon as one of the main characters.
2. The only redeeming part about Gates to Infinity was the "LET'S BUILD A MOTHERFUCKING PARADISE!" part, and you can make dojos and shops and farms and crazy shit, which added a lot more things to do. But other than that, the soundtrack wasn't as good as the previous ones, I never got through the whole game to tell you if the story was good because I was so bored of it by then, and what pisses me off the most is that you don't even get to pick starters from the other gens excluding gen 5 and Pikachu.

TL;DR: Sky is my favorite, and Infinity is a big step lower than the other ones.

It's definitely not as hard. At all. Even losing in a dungeon, you don't lose as many items or money. The first games were so unforgiving in comparison.

Lack of quiz at the beginning and lack of possible choices for you and your partner pissed me off, though.

The story was good and the ending had me crying (as do all PMD games).

I wanna be an Eevee again, though, with a Vulpix partner.

And good graphics can at least give something nice to look at. It doesn't make or break a game by a long shot, but it's not completely dispensable either.

Something no one else has really mentioned: in Sky, EVERY POKEMON THAT EXISTED AT THE TIME, except Arceus, was fully recruitable and playable. This includes forme changes.

In Gates to Infinity, you get maybe 100 or so Pokemon to play with, most of them from Gen V.

I did think there was a far greater of enemies in Sky, but I've not had any worthwhile pokemon join me so far (currently playing Igglybuff's episode) and they're borderline dead-weight and a drain on precious reviver seeds. Gates never really had that problem from start to finish for me.

Of course, the situation might get better later on. Do any actual characters join your team later in the story? (Don't spoil who)

Every Pokemon has a recruit rate, similar to the capture rate mechanic in the main series. Similarly, some Pokemon are harder to recruit than others (an evolved Pokemon for example is always harder to befriend). You can boost your chances with certain IQ skills, hold items, and by increasing your Level.

A number of Pokemon do join you for story purposes, and then after certain points they join you permanently, with the exception of one case I can think of. They're also usually capable of holding there own; the exception is one who joins you in the postgame story.

You will come to hate this one individual with every fiber of your being. It is not because they are a jerk, or because they treat you like trash, or anything involving personality. No, you will come to hate them because they get themselves killed constantly in the dungeon, eating at your Reviver Seeds, and are practically useless against the boss at the end, continuing to eat up your Reviver Seeds.

Cresselia joins you in the post game story. Specifically, the final dungeon. In PMD, there are lava tiles that burn you if you're not a Fire-type. Cresselia, because they float, can and will cross these tiles, meaning they get burned constantly. They also have an IQ skill that makes them "protect" you by taking damage from an attack or move in your place. For the boss at the end, you are surrounded by several Pokemon.

Because of said IQ skill, Cresselia will try to protect you each time, meaning they get themselves killed, meaning they use up a Reviver Seed. They can only protect you once a turn, meaning you're probably going to get hit anyway during the other Pokemons' turns, meaning they're probably going to die AGAIN. I hope you brought a lot of Reviver Seeds.

This is the reason I won't get Gates to Infinity.

I don't give a fuck about the fancy 3D graphics if you cut the content that fucking much. 5 playable characters, four being from Unova and the other being GF's favorite Pokémon to whore out. Only two Kanto evolution lines. I don't mean to sound like a genwunner, and I do like a lot of newer designs and I do recognize that Gen I had some stinkers, but really, cutting out almost the entirety of Kanto? And most of Johto and Hoenn and Unova?

If they made a sequel to Gates that actually had a decent number of Pokémon, I'd probably buy it instantly, but between having no 'mons and me hearing they really casualified it, I'm never buying Gates.

That being said, I loved Explorers, probably my favorite game in the entire Pokémon franchise. Rescue was also pretty good but I played it after Explorers so it felt a little rough around the edges, but I understand my views are a little skewed by playing a sequel that improved on the rough parts of the original.

Same. Even if I don't use a lot of the pokemon, I should still be able to recruit them or use them in a replay through of the game.

Takes way too fucking long to get anyone who's not 'you' or the partner to stages that aren't useless so they all rotted in the recruit roster. Yay, almost 500 pokemon! Too bad I'm only ever going to use two of them!

That being said, if you think the gameplay's good enough to warrant hours of gummi and level grinding, then my opinions are less than worthless.

Low pokemon count's still pretty shit though
