when an egg is created and one parent is holding teh knot, one of teh child's 6 ivs will be random. the other 5 will each be randomly selected to match either the mother's or father's at 50% chance. so you could get, for example, random hp, mom's atk and dad's def spa spd and spe. or you could get random def, mom's hp and spd and dad's atk spa and spe. or any other combination.
