You know what I really liked about Pokemon The Origin? Instead of portraying Pokemon Gyms as arbitrary boss battles (which honestly never made sense to me, since they use different levels of Pokemon for different trainers anyway), they have a deeper purpose.
The gym is there to teach you about the things that might not be obvious, how to have heart and connect to your team. The Gym Leaders are in their position not because they have a level 20-something monotype team, but because they have important wisdom to pass to growing trainers and know how to teach through experience.
My question is, is there any way to get this aspect across in the games as well? I've always though Gym battles in the games kind of sucked as a boss battle because it's very easy to just exploit their weakness or overlevel. How do we make Gyms something more?
