You could literally tell countless stories with Pokemon's foundation, but Gamefreak instead has opted to tell completely random and alienating ones, as if it's trying to be another thing.
Video games don't express story in the same way that movies or books do. That's a problem for the newer Pokemon titles.
>>15573228Basically this. Pokemon used to be completely independent of final fantasy. If people wanted intense JRPG storytelling, they would've played those games, there were and still are plenty of them. Something tells me you won't be getting much better stories from any of those either, though.
Pokemon's been having it's own little identity crisis ever since ruby/sapphire.

Shadow of the Colossus uses story to accent it's actual gameplay. Pokemon's newer stories work completely independent of anything you do in the game.
The issue is that Pokemon's original "themes" of growing up and becoming a champion actually did work well within it's gameplay.
