Why are there so many Psychic-types?

There are a lot of Psychic-types with 3+ Pokemon in their evolutionary chain. Compare this to Ice, for example, which are many non-evolving and single-evolving Pokemon.

Gamefreak has a huge boner for Psychic types. It is no surprise that they would be the fifth most common.

Also, pretty much any Pokemon that can perform any sort of "magic" gets either a Psychic or, less commonly, Ghost typing.
