yes, but for example I can’t find a squirtle in the wild in Platinum, so I’d need a Gen I game to trade with. I’m asking what other games I’ll need to trade with in order to catch ‘em all.

FRLG is just the Kanto flavor in the Hoenn Engine.

If you want gen 4 only games, you'll need all 5.

HG for Kyogre
SS for Groudon
Both HG and SS for Rayquaza
Pearl for Glameow
Diamond for Stunky
And you still wouldn't be able to get Mew, Celebi, Jirachi and Deoxys.

I hate the notion that you can't complete older games because of dead events. Pokemon economy is a joke and GF are complete hypocrites about DLC in XY.

Also if you have access to Emerald and FR/LG games, then you don't need HGSS (all Pokemon unobtainable in DPPt can be obtained in those two). Although Johto starters require you to complete Hoenn Pokedex in Emerald which actually requires you to have Ruby and Sapphire as well (to get Lunatone and Zangoose). Alternatively if you have Colosseum or XD, you can get the Johto starters from there (snagged from Cipher Peons in Colosseum or beat Mt. Battle 3 times in XD).

The game is based on trading. You want a pokemon? Find someone to trade for it. Not hard. I completed my Gen 4 Pokedex by trading on the internet and going to events. I played the GTS so often I would up with a stockpile of Jirachis and Doexys simply because I could. I deleted any that didn't look legit.

To sum up, you'll either need:
Pt + D + P + HG + SS (+ R/S/E assuming you don't have event Regigigas)

Pt + D + P + HG/SS + E

Pt + D + P + E + Col + XD

And these still don't include event Pokemon.

Yes. Although Diamond is only needed for one Pokemon (Stunky). If you have a friend with the game or if the GTS is still going, you don't have to buy that game.

And get HG rather than SS, since you need HG to get Growlithe. You can catch Vulpix in Emerald.

Easiest method would be Diamond + Pearl + Platinum + Emerald + Colosseum + XD. XD gives you a free, easy Lucky Egg, and both console games make it easier to get certain Pokemon such as Dragonite, Tyranitar, and the Johto legendaries.
