Luvdisc gets Hidden Power too and actually has other moves as well. It also has a usable Speed stat so it can actually get a hit in before it dies unlike Unown (which admittedly hits harder, but is too slow and frail to ever hit anything ever).

I caught a shiny farfetch'd in SS. I'd played since gen 1, and this was my first shiny. I was stoked and very sad at the same time. The shiny growlithe I hatched yesterday more than makes up for it...

A lot of pokemon are useful/fun outside the competitive scene. For example, unown have that whole campaign surrounding them.

Even luvdisc has the heart scale thing going for it.

Not every Pokemon exists for battling, some are just there for the sake of lore. I've never seen that as being a problem in the Pokemon world, it just makes the whole experience feel more expansive and like its own universe instead of simply being a monster fighting RPG.

I enjoy the anime for this reason too, I don't watch it with the intention of it being a really great anime, I just watch it because I love the Pokemon world as a whole. My childlike love for Pokemon never left in this respect
