Middle stages are shit, if you like cute Pokemon the first stage is better, if you like cool or powerful Pokemon the final stage is going to be better.

Since Platinum I've been keeping my starter unevolved until about level 34-ish so it will only need to be in that shitty middle form for one level.

Most of them are terrible, it's like they make the first and final stages cool, then throw something together to fill the gap. Braixen and Dewott are better than their evolved forms though.
