Can we talk about Avalugg? I want to use him. I thought he looked stupid at first, but he looks like quite a bro, on par with the King. I wish he lived in my home so I could rest my feet on his back, or set my beverages on him to stay chilly.

I saw this moveset on smogon
- Rapid Spin
- Recover
- Avalanche
- Earthquake / Roar / Stone Edge
but Recover and spin don't make sense on a choice poke

Alright, here's my set. It's really gimmicky but it's really two tricks in one.

Mirror Coat

You can either switch him in on physical sweepers and shut them down with EQ/Boosted stab avalance and recover it off, or if you can manage to get him in front of a special sweeper without taking a hit first, they never see mirror coat coming. Only problem is once you're down to 1HP from sturdy, you're pretty fucked because he's too slow to recover (at least until you can get a custap berry somehow, or can you). If you're looking more towards the mirror coat thing, you can swap out the weakness policy for a sitrus berry and at least have a chance at getting a recover in.

I don't like Blissey. I think a mon that, like Avalugg, can dish some heavy damage while tanking would work better.

I I would think something like Goodra, that has a workable Sp. Atk stat and doesn't care about the Fire-type attacks that Avalugg hates so much.

Another Pokémon I like for an Avalugg partner is Specially Defensive Tentacruel. Can also take Fire-type attacks and provides Rapid Spin support.

This things problem is that Ice is a really shitty defensive typing, especially for a physical wall. However, it's movepool is pretty good (Recover and Rapid Spin), and it has insane physical bulk.

Problem is that Tentacruel and Avalugg can't take a Thunderbolt well and anything could carry it.

Anyone try using him instead of Skarmory in the old Skarm/Bliss combo? Possibly with a Goodra instead of the Blissy since they're a lot easier to get. Switch out for him if your opponent is a physical sweeper, switch for Goodra when your opponent inevitably sends out a special sweeper to deal with him (especially a fire type), rinse and repeat. Stealth Rock hurts because of his weakness, but he can Spin those away and recover any damage he's taken as long as you don't let your opponent set up too many layers.

Megga Aggron would work better, but this lets you spend the 3rd slot on another Megga.

Actually no. Even when is low, his Special Defense may help him to take weak hits if necessary.

The Stat that you must overlook are either SAtk and Speed >>15597310

He heals 1/8th of his HP a turn, and protects every other turn, so 1/4th of his HP between each attack. That plus recover means 3/4ths of his HP is healed between each attack. Toxic+Hail kills in 5 turns, but he could probably even last the 16 turns needed to kill a poison/steal type with Hail alone, as long as they were physical and had no way to recover the damage.

Switch in on a physical attacker, toxic the switch (and hope it's not poison or steel), protect the next turn, recover/protect the next two turns if you think you can make it (risky, but worth it against pokemon without anything super effective and fairly low special attack), then run like hell.

Might work better with Careful nature and 252 Sp.Def instead of Impish and 252 Def, but someone would have to work out the math on his ability to survive various special attacks from various pokemon.
