Just got Pokemon X, Haven't played since generation 2. What pokemon make up the best team for competitive online play? Would this team also be good for playing the story? Which stats do I need to EV train? Any help would be great!

Just play with anyone you want. When you're doing going through the story and such go take a look at the competitive battling thread. It's as simple as that, don't worry about anything else but having fun with the game till you want to battle online.

Early usage stats from the first week of online play which should give you a better idea on what other people consider useful guys just keep in mind that things will likely change a lot over the next few months.

It's more important to have a team that fits well together and cover each others weaknesses than to just pick the 6 most used guys though.

And also you better off just having fun and learning about all the pokemon you missed and type match ups and stuff

The game is incredibly easy so just play casually and take your time enjoying it. Don't bother with trying to get "good" pokemon until you beat the E4. Anything remotely competitive will make the game no fun at all.
