Not that anon, but I lost too, and I didn't have to. The dialogue isn't exactly explicit about the result of the battle either, so I think this is one of those rare cases where they actually let you lose.

I did this on my digital copy of X, and you pass out like normal and go back and she's waiting for you to battle her at the tower like nothing happened. Serena just asks if your ready, THIS, time and the cycle repeats till you beat her.

You literally cannot progress the game until you beat her.

That would be a problem, if Yvetal and Xerneas didn't have the catch rate of a bidoof. and if you chose the big nugget instead of the masterball in the pokeball factory 20 minutes before you face your cover legendary.

I lost twice and it had different dialog because "she wanted Lucario to see the power of a mega evolution" when I just sort of swords danced the first time not knowing she only had lucario and mega bone rushed to die the second time.

if you run they will just sit there, you can leave the flare base and do whatever and they will just wait till you get back. Also you have to fight 4 admins right before that so you will have money.
