Glad you asked! They're extremely rare variations of pokemon with different color pallets. There's about a 1/8000 chance of encountering them in the wild randomly without any RNG manipulation or methods that increase your chance of encountering one, so it isn't uncommon for some players to have never seen one before despite having played one or more games.

The most common methods are the Masuda Method, Shiny Fishing, and PokeRadar Chaining, however there seems to be a higher chance of finding shinies in the Friend Safari as well. The three aforementioned methods are covered in the guides section in OP.
>What's the Masuda Method?
Named after Junichi Masuda, one of Diamond/Pearl's developers, programmed a little something special into the games that increases the shiny rate when breeding under certain conditions. Simply, a pokemon traded from a foreign country should be breeded with a pokemon from your cartridge. This increases the rate of an egg containing a shiny by 4x in DPPt, and 5x in prior games. See the guide in OP for more details.
>What's a shiny charm?
A key item in Gen V that increases your chances of finding a shiny. 1/2730 in the wild, and 1/1024 when using the Masuda Method. It cannot be traded through games.

The majority of /vp/ thinks this is true, but there hasn't been a datamine of the X/Y ROMs so nobody can say for sure.

See the GFShinyGuide link in OP. While far easier to find and catch than with the other methods, the pool of available pokemon attainable from fishing is small, and because they much easier to catch, they aren't valued as high as other non-fishable shiny pokemon. Don't fret, you can usually throw a fishing shiny up on the GTS and get most any non-shiny pokemon for it. No hard shiny:normal fish ratios yet, but a rough estimate brings it around 1/200 on average at maximum probability.

When using the Pokeradar under extremely certain circumstances, one can increase their probability of encountering a shiny in grass. This is the more tricky method of the three, as it requires that you follow certain rules in order not to break your "chain" or "streak". None of them have good natures or anything. The Abra is alright with Docile and both defenses having 31, but I'm not looking for anything good in return. As long as it isn't chain fished I'll consider it.

Why don't you guys bring a Pokemon specifically for catching shinies? Like a Foresight+False Swipe Weavile, Farfetch'd or Smeargle? If you've gotten as far into the game to get to a ghost safari, having a spot in your party shouldn't be that big of a deal.

Shiny legendaries take a lot of time, I SR'd for a shiny Lugia for around a week.
XY came out not so long ago, so people just want to play. since you need Xerneas/Yveltal to progress people either give up quickly or just don't bother at all.

I was just breeding a Gogoat for my team, not using Masuda or anything. Funny thing is I was actually imagining what it would be like if I randomly got a shiny.

Just got my Mawiles set up at the day care for MMing. Two penta-perfect ones, each with Special Attack as the only IV not 31. Fire Fang and Ice Fang egg moves, and in premier balls. I'm ready.

Comfort me shiny general ;__; I just spent three hours chaining for a Sliggoo, got a chain up to 40 and started resetting the radar... the next thing I knew I had reset at least 50 times looking for that glorious shiny patch and used up 160 super repels. I'm absolutely convinced at this point that only some Friend Safaris have higher shiny rates. I spent about five hours in one safari and got two shinies. I've spent three days in another safari with absolutely no shinies at all. Both have all three pokemon unlocked, and neither have been online.

so I saved before evolving it just to see shiny blissey. When I look at it in summary though it's all white except its feet (pink). Shader issue? Blissey looks ok in battle. I still think it's better to keep shiney chansey than blissey.

as every shiny i've had are from people with 3 pokemon, roaming around people with 2 has so far been unsuccessful

I've been playing pokemon since red and blue, I played through every generation and their respective post-games, and I've never ONCE seen a shiny.
I tried doing that MM thing, got a jap ditto, and literally five hundred boxes later, I still haven't found a single shiny.
