Glad you asked! They're extremely rare variations of pokemon with different color pallets. There's about a 1/8000 chance of encountering them in the wild randomly without any RNG manipulation or methods that increase your chance of encountering one, so it isn't uncommon for some players to have never seen one before despite having played one or more games.
>1/8000 is too high! How do I get one easily?
The most common methods are the Masuda Method, Shiny Fishing, and PokeRadar Chaining, however there seems to be a higher chance of finding shinies in the Friend Safari as well. The three aforementioned methods are covered in the guides section in OP.
>What's the Masuda Method?
Named after Junichi Masuda, one of Diamond/Pearl's developers, programmed a little something special into the games that increases the shiny rate when breeding under certain conditions. Simply, a pokemon traded from a foreign country should be breeded with a pokemon from your cartridge. This increases the rate of an egg containing a shiny by 4x in DPPt, and 5x in prior games. See the guide in OP for more details.
>What's a shiny charm?
A key item in Gen V that increases your chances of finding a shiny. 1/2730 in the wild, and 1/1024 when using the Masuda Method. It cannot be traded through games.
>Is the shiny rate higher in the Friend Safari?
The majority of /vp/ thinks this is true, but there hasn't been a datamine of the X/Y ROMs so nobody can say for sure.

See the GFShinyGuide link in OP. While far easier to find and catch than with the other methods, the pool of available pokemon attainable from fishing is small, and because they much easier to catch, they aren't valued as high as other non-fishable shiny pokemon. Don't fret, you can usually throw a fishing shiny up on the GTS and get most any non-shiny pokemon for it. No hard shiny:normal fish ratios yet, but a rough estimate brings it around 1/200 on average at maximum probability.
>What is chaining?
When using the Pokeradar under extremely certain circumstances, one can increase their probability of encountering a shiny in grass. This is the more tricky method of the three, as it requires that you follow certain rules in order not to break your "chain" or "streak". The higher your chain, the more likely it is that you'll encounter a shiny. See the guide in OP for more details.

GTS works most of the time. Just put up a ditto and ask for a foreign one in the notes. IVs are trickier, but you can probably squeeze a request in the notes as well.

It has perfect stats except speed. The IV man says it wont go anywhere with it's speed. I'm assuming he means it has a 0 Speed IV?

You can always test it out in a random safari first. You should always find females if your Charmer's a male and vice versa.

How are you all MMing?

I have a theory that a MAJOR part of the burn out I feel well doing this is in the process of laying and hatching back to back.

Annoy as fuck to hatch them, then go back to collecting them, then go back to hatching them.

So if I have time tonight I'm just gonna fill up about 4-5 boxes with eggs and the next day I will O-Power hatch them. if I get no results I will radar or wonder trade with my remaining game time and start over the next day.

Anyone else do this? Can it keep ya sane?

Hey- I'm looking for a non USA Masuda buddy.

Basically, I want to breed competitively viable shinies, so it'd be nice to be able to get a 4 or 5 31 IV foreign pokemon for different egg groups, or even for specific species.

Naturally, I would be happy to do the same thing for any pokemon that my Masuda buddy would be interested in.

Just hoping to find someone cool that doesn't mind doing a lot of breeding. I only work a couple days a week so I can be relatively fast with 5 IV babies.

Hour seven or so overall searching for Onix with three blue Shuckles to show for it. Still nada on the rock snake.
Finally found a new safari so my choices are reduced to Onix and Dwebble, whose shiny is so similar it puts me on edge. I keep checking the Pokedex every now and then to make sure I didn't miss a shiny one.

Well, it seems logical that the best way to check if something does or doesn't break a chain.
Is to have a fresh game.
Chain while counting like I did, try something, chain again.
Fly to route 16 and check what the fisherman says your chain is.

It could be that what he see's as a chain, is different from what "counts" as a chain to the shiny generator but whatever, my storys legit take it as you want.

Allegedly, a group investigated the PTX, or whatever they're called, files for X and Y and found that pokemon that shouldn't be shiny in V Gen are shiny in VI Gen. They crunched the numbers and found that the overall encounter rate has been doubled.

Decided to stock up on some wild hold items, got my Compound Eyes Pokemon and Frisker Pokemon ready and set out to the waters. Figured I'd chain fish just for the added chance of shinies. Two shiny Luvdisc when looking for Heart Scales. A shiny Barboach and Poliwhirl while gathering King's Rocks to attach to PokeRus'd Slowpoke/Poliwhirl over Wonder Trade. A shiny Octillery when getting some Deep Sea Scales for PokeRus'd Clamperl to Wonder Trade.

Everything appeared very quickly, except for the Octillery which appeared at the end of a chain of 204. Didn't think I was that high in the chain, as I never keep count. Chain Fishing is the best way to blow off steam after the stresses of Battle Maison.

We have several shinies that are confirmed to have (id xor sid) xor (pid high xor pid low) to be between 0 and 15, whereas before it was 0 and 7 (hence 8/65536, 1/8192). I'm not sure if it was posted on the project pokemon thread, but it may have been - we did this in the irc.

I actually went on Friend Safari looking for an Adamant synchronizer and ended up finding a Shiny male Espurr, it's a Rash nature.

I don't really like Espurr either so.. anyone want to trade it for something else that's a shiny?
