Okay, I'm going to come out and say it. I've never played pokemon before. I just never picked it up in my youth. My girlfriend, roommates, and just about everyone I talk to say that X and Y are a good way to get into it. So my girlfriend got X and I got Y. What are some basics I should know? What is a good intro guide to pokemon? Pic unrelated.

Just play it and have fun.

Make sure you talk to every NPC, since they all love handing out free shit, but otherwise, just have fun. If you're worried about a "competitive" team, you can build that after you're used to the game and have beaten it and everything.

Talk to all the NPCs, they will tell you what you need to know.

The only thing that nobody ever tells you about is STAB. (Same type attack bonus).

Pokemon do 50% more damage with moves that match their own type.

Memorize this chart and you should be fine in game.
Also, don't teach your pokemon all attacks of the same types so they can cover their own weaknesses.

There are some things to keep in mind while training your pokemon, like type weaknesses. A fire type like fenekin is weak to water, and strong against grass type. Grass is strong against water and weak to fire, and water is weak to grass etc. there are many more types than that, so I would recommend looking up a type chart.

shit, I just have a level 54 Espurr (I love those thousand mile stare eyes) And he seems to do okay just by himself. My friends are impressed I got past gym 6 in two days. I owe it more to grinding than to any real skill.

Oh also were can I buy more quickballs? I thought I bought them somewhere once but now I can't remember.

One tip is that's some pokemon are better at attack than special attack. Attacks are like hitting kicking tackling etc, and special attack is mostly beams and shit. Give your pokemon either physical or special attacks depending on which stat is higher. Also, sometimes pokemon can learn moves that aren't their main type, so try give them moves that are strong against types that they are weak to.

That's only for competitive player vs player and postgame min-maxing. For now, just enjoy the game as it is.

Don't worry about all that stuff yet, only if you want to do serious online battles.
You can buy them at pokemon centers in certain towns, but Lumiose has a pokeball shop that sells all the special balls. Grab a cab to get there easy.

Not cover their weakness, so much as what resists them. Like getting a ground type a rock move to hit flying, or a normal type dark attacks to hit ghosts.

One thing I always fucked up as a kid was I didn't bother looking at each pokemon's stats, so I always figured that if the move has high base power, it must be a good move to use.

For example: Thunder, Fire blast, and Blizzard on a tyrannitar

Basically, make sure you pay attention to a pokemon's stats to make sure you make the most out of it, an attack oriented pokemon won't do shit if it uses special attacks
