I'm trying, /vp/. I really am.

I'm trying my hardest to get into the meta game of Pokemon, and maybe I'm just retarded but this shit is confusing the hell out of me. I finally understand EVs and IVs for the most part, but some of the breeding stuff is still over my head.

If I want to breed a Pokemon for IVs but also want to have an Egg move, does that mean it's impossible for me to breed Ditto as the original Pokemon's mate? Or is there some way I can guarantee an egg move be passed down to all offspring while breeding with a Ditto for IVs?

Also, is the Friend Safari the only way to get Pokemon with Hidden Abilities?

So say I want to breed for a Pinsir with IVs in attack and speed, but I also want it to have Quick Attack as an Egg Move. Does that mean I can only breed it with one of the 10 Pokemon that will pass down that move, and Ditto is not an option?

Meaning I have to find either a Pinsir or one of those ten Pokemon with an Adamant nature, give it an Everstone, and then breed for the IVs and the egg move?

You're best off to start by breeding Pinsirs with the Pokemon that has Quick Attack, then breeding it with the ditto, to get your IVs in the right spots.

Yes, because mother can pass down egg moves in XY.

Wouldn't work in the previous gen though.

How about the Hidden Abilities thing? Is Friend Safari the only way to get a Pokemon with its Hidden Ability?

Just realized I don't know this either - How would I ensure that the baby was a Pinsir and not the Pokemon I bred it with for the move?

Sorry I literally know nothing about how breeding works.

Firstly, IV training and EV training are completely separate procedures, so worry about those seperately. IVs are the innate numbers to a pokemon, EVs are the extra numbers that go on afterwards.

Generally speaking, the child gets the parent's moves, so I assume they would. Ditto breeding is kind of strange since the way Ditto interacts with the process can be a bit confusing.

It's worth mentioning that in previous games, only Males could pass on Egg Moves. In Gen 6, both females and males can, so it's much easier to do.

Easiest way to know is to find out for yourself, I expect the child will get the parent's moves - use the move deleter and delete any unwanted moves from the parents just to make sure.

Another tip regarding egg moves is that the children will inherit any moves the parent has AT THE TIME that the parent is entered into the Daycare. Leave the pokemon with the egg moves in long enough and they will eventually be overwritten by Level-up moves, so if you need them back on that pokemon then you'll need to go the Move Relearner and stick them back on.

When passing down Natures, the parent with the nature you has to hold the Everstone.

The other parent holds the Destiny Knot - the Destiny Knot takes IVs from 5 both parents so it makes no difference which parent holds it.

Alot of breeding can involve chain breeding, or gradually introducing new elements into a chain. Getting Egg moves, Natures AND moves into one chain is a pain but it's easy to do.

You should only breed with Dittos as a starting point anyways, once you get a female with good IVs and a male with the egg moves you want breed with them instead.

One you get a female with 2-3 perfect IVs and the egg moves you should breed again with Dittos to get a male with 2-3 perfect IVs in the other stats.

Hidden Abilities used to only be available from the Dream World in Black and White, now they are:

It's worth noting that Hidden Abilities used to only be inherited from the mother, but breeding a Male with a Ditto will produce children with hidden abilities (but the probability of doing so is lower)

The pokemon produced from breeding are ALWAYS the same species as the female. Ball type is also inherited from the female (i.e. the ball it was caught in), and the Ability of the child is more likely to be the mother's.

The role of the male in breeding is to provide IVs, Egg Moves and Natures that the female lacks.

For the sake of breeding, Ditto takes the role of a female, even when paired with another female. This is how it breeds with Genderless pokemon that cannot breed otherwise.

And yeah, Ditto's only worth in the breeding process is to set the Nature you want on the children and contribute any IVs you want. Past a certain point you would start breeding children with other children/parents because incest is completely fine in the pokemon world.

You can't "guarantee" anything, simply affect the probability.

Destiny Knot takes 5 IVs from the 12 IVs available (6 IVs from each parent) and sticks those on the child . Imagine it as a card dealer dealing out 12 cards and then picking up five - that's how Destiny Knot works.

It's really not that hard as it seems.

If you're breeding a Friend Safari pokemon, then you don't need a Ditto, you just need the pokemon on it.

So for example, I wanted a perfect Froakie so I caught a female Frogadier with Protean from the safari (I stuck a Male pokemon with Cute Charm fainted in front, then a Ralts with Trace second). Then I caught a bunch of Male Frogadiers this time using a Timid nature Abra with Synchronise.

Then I just bred those together. When the children had 3 IVs, I stuck those in the daycare. When the children started getting 4 IVs, I stuck those. Eventually I had a Timid Froakie with 31 in every stat besides Attack.

Ditto's only really for pokemon not in a friend safari.
