Every time Ash has appeared on TV, it's been in the league tournaments. His performances there were solid - and a few stood out - but ultimately he lost and was eliminated. Another anon once asked "How many bronze medalists can you recall by name from the last Olympics?"
It's kind of like that. I'm sure the illustrious Mr. Ketchum has a handful of dedicated fans out there, but probably less than you're thinking. Remember that Ash is only special to us as viewers - to the PokePublic he's just "that kid with the pikachu who does pretty good but never wins". Would anybody even ask for his autograph or speak up if they DID recognize him?
It's a real shame though, he's saved the world like 20 times and nobody was there to see it so fuck him I guess.
