So, Ash lost to a damn Surskit using a Pikachu and a Fletchling, but Red owned a Onix using a Charmander, and also, Red kicked Mewtwo's ass with Mega Charizard and then caught it. So why people watch the stupid anime?

Mind you that the main gimmick of origins was to show red's starter win every battle through the power of friendship, every other pokemon red had was quickly disposed of by the opponent including an articuno.

Did you even fucking watch the episode? The issue of Pikachu's fluctuating level aside, Ash's competition was pretty fucking powerful for a first gym. Surskit with Ice Beam and Signal Beam, using them creatively? Vivillon with Psychic? Remember that his Fletchling was only just caught and doesn't have the battle experience that Pikachu has.
While I totally expected Ash to lose at least one gym battle this season, they pulled it off really well by making his opponent actually competent.
