>>15708457I'd like to see HMs removed, and see every mon get two "overworld effects"; a terrain and an action.
The idea is, you ride your Pokemon to get around, and each mon has both a terrain class they can uniquely cross over (sand, spines/thorns, deep snow, water, airborne gaps) and an interaction with the environment (cut things, push things, smash things, climb things, dive into things). And those mix.
So for example, a water terrain pokemon with dive can dive underwater, while an airborne terrain pokemom with dive can dive into canyons/crevasses. Climb becomes waterfall for water terrainers, or rock climb for rocky terrainers.
The gag is, since you can only ride one mon at a time, and cannot switch between mons you're riding unless you're on "neutral" terrain where the player can stand, you get maze/puzzle effects; if you're on thorny terrain and your mon has thorny/cut, it can cut those trees to left, but not shove the downed logs to the right like a mon with thorny/strength. So there are different routes based on which mons you have.
Obviously you still need to partially build a team around their riding abilities, but you don't have to eat up their battle potential with moves.
Also, I guess for mons one couldn't reasonably ride (ekans, caterpie, whatever) they can still have one interaction (cut, strength, whatever) and their "terrain" ability becomes something else useful like increasing/decreasing encounter rate, finding secret shit, whatever, and when you go to "ride" them you just walk beside them instead.
