Gyarados's actual 3D model looks fine, but it's coloring is really off. I think it might be the blue they used.
Reuniclus looks okay until it gets a close up, then it looks really low quality.
Talonflame's wings clip through its body in its animation from the trainer's point of view, looks cheap as fuck once you notice it.
But they did a good job with Marowak (apart from the bonemerang animation) so I can forgive them. He's muh fave

Just like this dude, I think gen 1 designs are fine, but people get erect all over Arcanine, Ninetails, Charizard, and the like and they're not really as good as people make them sound. They're fine, certainly not bad, but they're not the fucking gods of pokemon design.

I think everyone got spoiled by all the sprites of the older games. A lot of Pokemon were essentially striking poses with their sprites, and it wouldn't translate as well in 3D. They had to make them have more netural idle animations or else it would look jarring. It's the reason why Hitmontop is on it's legs when not attacking instead of being on its head like all the sprites of the older games.

In any case, most of these critters are able to hover thanks to their smaller size. And hummingbird flight mechanically differs from that of say an eagle or a sparrow.

A Braviary wouldn't be capable of hovering as a hummingbird would thanks to its size and its difference in flight.
