how do hidden abilities work in x and y? googled with no definitive answer. they said the only way was a horde capture or friend safari. did I waste my time breeding zangeese?

You get them from catching them in friend safari.
Once you have one with the hidden ability you can breed it and produce eggs with hidden ability, but you have to get them from friend safari initially.

I don't know about horde.

Pokemon found in Friend safari have a chance of having their hidden ability (this chance is higher if the person who's friend safari you are in is online at the smae time)

Males can pass down Hidden abilities, but only when bred with Ditto.

Females pass down hidden abilities only when bred with the same spiecies.
