My highest used to be like 6 levels below the last Gym Leader's ace. That was fucking terrible.
Oh, and I accidentally fought the 7th Gym Leader before the 5th and 6th. That was fun since I could barely do enough damage to kill his ace before it used fucking Rest again.
This would probably go a lot better had I remembered a single thing about my old Gen 2 playthrough as a kid other than failing to catch a shiny Rattata.
