I don't understand why people think gym leaders are chopped liver. They are gym leaders for a reason, they aren't some random mook trainers, they (usually) know their shit and have some strong pokemon to go with that. Viola clearly demonstrated that.

Still, Ash could see that his Pikachu was helpless on the ice, why didn't he switch to Fletchling? Maybe he would have then had a chance against Vivillion. He's travelled across five different regions and he's not putting anything that he's learnt into practice. It's annoying.
