Well if they are talking about it in a particular regard, and saying its the only good gen because it was the only gen which introduced that much mechanics even with their flaws. Then in that regard maybe they have a point, but in terms of what gen is best to play, they aint got nothing.

Only in link battles. In-game, you can switch out of it.

I think what happened here is that they used a script to generate the movesets. Notice how all of their movesets are just their most recent level up moves.

Compare to FR/LG, where you can tell they actually hand-made those movesets since they have TMs and stuff. They still suck, though.

...Then again, didn't Lance's Dragonite wind up with Barrier, a move it can't actually ever learn? Why would Lance get custom movesets while Blue did not?
The fact that Blue had multiple teams depending on your starter might explain the low-effort attack sets, though...

Game Freak did the mistakes they did in Generation I because of the long development period (1990-1995), financial issues that nearly drove the compwny to bankruptcy (as even Satoshi Tajiri himself stopped receiving his own salary, requiring assistance from his parents) and the inexperience of the staff, which only had 4 programmers at the time.

Generation II fixed most of the problems with Generation I in terms of mechanics, which had already been partially fixed by Stadium, and Yellow had already updated the movepool a bit (Charizard can finally learn Fly, unlike in Red/Green/Blue; Butterfree learns Confusion at lv10, immediately after evolving from Metapod, instead of lv12, etc.). Of course, there were compromises to keep backwards compatibility with Generation I, which is why the Special stat split into Special Attack and Special Defense is only in terms of base stats; shininess depends on DVs (old-era IVs), etc. And they still only had 4 programmers.

Generation III saw a major overhaul in the mechanics, which have been established as the fundamental standard of modern core series Pokémon games. Generations IV, V, and VI have only improved, expanded, and corrected them further. And this is also why transfering Pokémon from Generations I and/or II to Generation III onwards is not possible, as there would be risks in the conversion process that could result in significant losses of saved game data.

I won Erica's gym using a level 10 Oddish because, back in the day, Grass Pokemon were immune to Sleep Powder. The AI in the gym was set to spam Sleep Powder whenever your Pokemon wasn't asleep. I literally spammed Cut while her Pokemon did nothing.

Mewtwo has the Pressure ability, meaning your Thundershock only has 15PP.

There's no way a level 5 Pokemon could bring down a level 70 Mewtwo down to 5HP even if every hit was a critical.

He was only difficult on your first play through when Scratch was the best attack and Tail Whip sounded the coolest.

Geodude and Onix have no Special stat to speak of (meaning their Sp.Defense stat was so pathetically low that a few Embers was enough to take them out)

But if you don't do any actual HP damage, then Bide has nothing to double and counter.

When an opponent uses Bide, use that as a chance to lower their stats or buff your own.
