I don't remember GameFreak ever identifying games by generation, it's just an arbitrary grouping based on PokeDex updates.
Wouldn't any games with a new Pokedex automatically be Gen VII? It's not like Final Fantasy where there are numbers in the titles and they can skip over one.
Unless the Pokedex goes from 721 to 844 or something and leaves a huge gap that GameFreak refuses to explain, which would be hilarious.
