Dear /vp/, Can I have a nostalgia-thread? I grew up with Gen I and Gen II, skipped Gen III, went into Gen IV when HG/SS came out (I played Platinum as well, but Black and White were a year away at this point), and have been dedicated to playing since then. Can I have some Gen I or Gen II love? Like, quirky fun facts or pointing out glaring flaws in the games?

I've been doing a no grinding, swap 2-3 Pokemon every beaten gym leader, Pokedex completion run of Red. Just beat Brock. People seem to think that you can't beat him with Charmander, but their special stat is so shit that Ember still hurts them like a bitch anyway.

>>15785394 Nah dude, he knows Tackle too! But in all seriousness, the Geodude's way harder. Much higher attack stat and can defense curl away your debuffs. Plus, Onix is very predictable since its main strategy is Bide.
Of course, they all go down like bitches to Bulbasaur and Squirtle.

Fun fact: this board is full of teenagers that were barely alive when the superior Gen 1 and 2 games were made. They think Gen 3 and 4 games are the best Pokemon games to ever exist. They know nothing about having an asshole rival who does everything in his power to be annoying as fuck at all the wrong times. They know nothing about catching rare Pokemon with effort and dedication instead of just trading them over the internet. They know nothing about myths and lore surrounding mysterious legendaries and glitches that may or may not even exist. And most importantly... they know nothing about the feeling of awe and wonder as you traverse a strange land filled with strange creatures you know nothing about. They're spoiled know-it-alls that have no idea what it feels like to be amazed by the wonderful world of Pokemon. That's why they hate "genwunners." They have no idea what we felt as we traded our Kadabras for Gravelers. Having a Chansey in your possession was incredible. They'll never understand.

Of course, I bowled over Brock with Squirtle, but in Yellow, Brock was a monster to try and defeat. Luckily, I learned about there being wild Mankeys outside of Victory Road, so I caught one to beat Brock with. Unfortunately, it would always die to the Onix, so then initiated challenge mode.

>>15785706 Oh god, thanks for reminding me. Mankey had horrible defense so while he would take down the Geodude, he'd come so close to taking down the Onix...but then he'd fail. That''s why I eventually switched to Butterfre as my way to take down Brock. Dat Confusion, plus I love its design. It actually reminds pretty decent the whole game thanks to it getting Psychic and most of the Kanto NPCs using poison-types. It having Sleep Powder very early was breddy good, too.

Charizard couldn't use Fly in Red/Blue. Yellow had to come in and add it. Yellow's pretty underrated. Like, the anti-genwunners shit on anything gen 1/2, while the genwunners love the shit out of Red/Blue, but Yellow gets no love from either side. I got the game and always played it. Not because I wanted to be like Ash or anything, but because I thought Pikachu was cool, and that having all three starters was cool as shit. Every single team I would make would have pikachu, the three starters, primeape, and one other thing. And I would always adore the spritework in that game. Some weird coloration aside (lel brown starmie) it was really boss. Moltres was the only bird I actually caught back then. I brought it to Lorelei where she proceeded to crush it, because back then, Fire didn't resist Ice. I thought Moltres looked so badass in Yellow, but in the later games he didn't seem to hold up as much. ...You know, maybe I should boot up Yellow again, for old time's sake. It needs more love. Sadly, bringing it up just leads to tons of shitposting. Not just the standard shitposting that comes with Gen 1, but also the shitposting that comes in with anything anime-related, and all the stupid fights over >muh continuity.

>>15786986 You had to actually play the fucking game and catch Pokemon that would give you an advantage against Brock, who no one could seem to fucking beat when Yellow was new. They were so used to wiping everything clean with the starters in Red and Blue that they didn't realize catching a Bellsprout nearby and Vine Whipping everything to death was a perfect strategy.

>>15785214 Why certainly, since you were VERY polite about the whole thing.
I guess I can start with the fact that you can get a Mew in Red/Blue through a glitch with so many weird, convoluted steps you'd be forgiven for thinking it was made up. Quoting the method I used from bulbapedia:
>For this method, the player needs to find any Trainer in the game that will engage in battle the moment the Trainer is on screen and the player is in the Trainer's line of sight. The player then needs to take one step down closer to the NPC, but make sure that the NPC does not see the player, and then immediately press the "START" button. The menu will appear and the player will be able to Fly or Teleport. The player needs to fly or teleport to Cerulean City. While flying, the exclamation point that usually appears above a Trainer's head when they challenge the player to battle will appear. The player then needs to go to Route 24 and, defeat the Youngster that owns a Slowpoke (and must walk along the wall to be seen, not towards him or the game will freeze). After defeating him, the player needs to fly or teleport to Lavender Town and head to Route 8. The menu will appear. Pressing B will make a wild Mew appear at Level 7. Anonymous
>>15787106 It also had a prototype for the happiness feature, which of course only applied to Pikachu.
Granted, it was probably developed for GS, since GS' development started way before Yellow's, but still, at least it gave us a little sneak preview.
>>15787150 This is a good point, and in one way I think this makes Yellow better than Red/Blue. It shows you that you just can't solo the game with one Pokemon, you need to catch other Pokemon that can help provide back up. Or at least, that's how it's supposed to go. It wasn't until alll the way into Gen 5 that Gamefreak finally cracked down on overleveled solo starter runs with the exp formula change.

You know what? I've always wanted to complete the pokedex when I was a kid, so why not? Gonna do a 151 Pokedex run of Yellow.
