Firstly, Trevenant and Malamar are good Pokémon, so your friends are idiots to start with. Don't tarnish everyone at Smogon with the same brush.
Secondly, DESIGN isn't the only reason to like a Pokémon. Fuck. I use Pokémon I like the design of and try to play to their unique attributes and make them perform well.
But I ALSO like Pokémon if they have a nice unique thing going on about them. Like Klefki...it's design isn't the best, but it has a million and one uses with Prankster that make it fun to use and don't revolve around hitting as hard as you can. For that reason, I like it.
In another way, I probably wouldn't like some Pokémon based on design if it wasn't for their animations.
Using aesthetic design as the one and only reason to like a Pokémon severely limits yourself. Sure, it's a big factor (especially initially), but don't make it the only one.
