People are saying that the illuminate ability increases the chance of encountering a shiny.
There isn't much proof to it, other that the fact that you encounter twice as many pokemon, so it therefore cuts the time in half.

Cram a bunch of pokemon with Illuminate into your party. There's no confirmation on whether it works or not, so it could just be a placebo effect, but I found two shinies last night after switching to it when I'd never seen a shiny in a safari before.

Even if there's no real effect to it, having 4 illuminate pokemon in your team doesn't hurt, so why not?

Technically the ability isn't even in effect because illuminate has to be in the lead.
Most people using the illuminate method have 3-6 in back of the party.

I'm guilty of doing it as well, but I've gottten a shiny while doing it and I've seriously never seen a wild shiny before.

Still not enough proof of this method working, so it's probably just a placebo effect.

Thanks! Honedge seems pretty popular to MM, but he also seems cursed. I've seen quite a few MMers give up on him.

Yeah, MMing is trying, to put it mildly. I can't stand the thought of grinding away for hours in the FS myself, too much luck and chance. Plus, you might get a terrible shiny - MM is slower, but my Goomy is penta-perfect and has the nature I want (she got Hydration again though, hue). All depends on why you hunt for shinies though.

Jesus Christ. I have spent at least 15 hours in the Friend Safari without one damn shiny. Masuda Method only took me 20 hours, and it got me better IVs and a guaranteed (not just 50% chance) nature. What the fuck.

Thanks a lot, man. I've made about ten backups, uploaded one onto Dropbox and will be putting a backup on the SD card that corrupted (it formatted fine, I'll probably never figure out what went wrong). I'm terrified of soft resetting now, however.

One nice thing is that my new Goomy is female (I wouldn't of minded if it was male, but I am a little more happy she's a girl) and that her IVs are a bit better. I decided to go for Modest to give her a bit more kick, Calm natures on SpD IV Goomies are a bit overkill in my experience. I'll have to grind for an Ability Capsule though, although I can see Hydration working nicely.

Actually, question to people who know more about this stuff than me - Hydration heals all status effects in rain. Goomy can learn Rain Dance and Rest. Would I be healed of the sleep ailment if I used Rest whilst it was raining? Just want to make sure...

About that Rain Dance + Rest thing: You need to keep track of turns if you use that. I have a vaporeon with the same set, and if you rest on the same turn the rain ends, the rain stops before Hydration activates. It can fuck you over.

Oh wow! Uh, I WT'd away my leftovers, and I have no shinies. I got some interesting Pokemon on WT last night though. I got an Adamant Mold Breaker Drilbur, an Adamant Mawile (Spanish tag, for you MMers) which LOOKS penta-perfect, I found a Taillow horde at last if you need one, Timid penta-perfect Ghastly, 4 IV perfect Garchomp (was my Goomies' dad), Jolly Electabuzz (Japanese tag) caught in a FS, a Timid Drought Ninetales I could breed, starters etc. Seriously, WT has been great recently. Full of great leftovers.

Yeah, I traded for a pentaperfect Honedge and then traded a Ditto for a Japanese one on the GTS. It was Hardy with 3 IVs, "relatively superior"; threw them in the daycare and maybe an hour and a half later, pentaperfect shiny Honedge. And I did that weird thing that I assume most Pokemon players do, especially with critical hits, wherein, while the egg was hatching, I thought, Wouldn't it be nuts if I got a shiny this early?

Alright thanks, not really the best versed in Shiny Hunting - Articuno is a favourite and getting it in that sweet Icy Blue would be pretty grand.

I guess I should carry a Synchro user and hope for Timid nature when/if I manage to encounter one.

Any voodoo for encountering it at a more likely shiny rate? Or do I just carry a 69 or lower and keep grinding out the zone changes until I see it?

Figured I'd give Masuda a go on my favorite Pokémon.
I don't have room to keep the failures so I can't give an exact box count, but it was probably about 3-4.

He's got 31/27/27/28/27/3 which is actually pretty nice considering I can use Speed Boost to patch that speed up, so I'm quite satisfied with this.

Not sure on the nickname though, Blue colour scheme + YanMEGA makes for a perfect Megaman joke, but I already called my Clawitzer that.

After a full night/morning of breeding two flawless Ralts, I had MM'd five Perfect Timid male Ralts with Trace. Being the autistic faggot I am, I wouldn't stop until I MM'd a female so I could have all Ralts forms in my Pokedex. I was about to give up when a wondrous Blue, Orange, and White being graced me with its presence:

Timid Shiny female Ralts with a 31/x/31/31/31/31 spread. 50/50 gender ratio my ass.

Luckily, Ralts is the only line of Pokemon that I want to have completely finished in my 'Dex. It still makes me sad that in about a month or so, people are going to think my perfect, Shiny team is hacked.

I'm just glad it's over. Shiny Timid Gengar is next on my list. Can't wait!

31/x/31/31/x/31 is perfectly fine if you're going to be using it as a sweeper or something. Gardevoir was meant to deal damage, not take it. Mega Garde can certainly take a hit or to, but she's still designed more as an offensive Pokemon than a defensive one.

Really, the only reason why I'd want 31 in Sp. Def is for a support Pokemon which Gardevoir is actually pretty decent at.

Just a quick question to people hunting for Shinies in FS or tall grass. Why are you looking for wild Pokemon that will likely have a bad nature and bad IV's? It takes arguably the same or even less amount of time and effort to MM a shiny Pokemon. If you have two perfect parents, you can basically guarantee a perfect/near perfect Shiny that will be usable in competitive usage. Even if you don't compete, it will absolutely stomp on everything else in-game.

I'm not being sarcastic or anything. I'm just genuinely curious. Chaining, obviously, is an exception to this question.

I got five shinies in 12 hours of MM, but I also know of people who have been MM for two weeks without a single Shiny. It really is all luck.

I guess if I'm investing the amount of time and effort into getting a Shiny, I at least want to make sure it will be usable. Taking a risk with the nature and only have two IV's that could be useless just doesn't seem worth it when compared to MM-ing.

Obviously MM is by far the superior option for actually getting a competitively viable shiny
But some people just collect shinies just to have them and use them, not competitively, just messing around
Also in the safari it has atleast 2 perfect IVs (not much but that's fine) and you could have a synchronize pokemon with the nature you want and hopefully get the nature you want on that shiny
