In a college setting, you should listen in to places where people sit. I found out that some people sitting by me the other day where playing Pokemon, then i saw the girl whip out the Pikachu XL to play too. Some people might be turned off, but just be approachable and kind and keep an eye on their body language.
You could also try and see if there are any Pokemon groups in your college.
Outside of that, you're probably boned. See if you can find a local Streetpass meetup or if there's a TCG thing happening. I know there's one near me but I've never been because I'm afraid they'll be shitty neckbeards and/or children.
/vp/ has some meetups sometimes too (usually in NYC though) that you could try. I think they're generally not shitty overall.

Screens is a rather common strategy but not completely necessary. Most of good teams in gen 5 used screens, though.

The most effective manner of getting shines is called the Masuda Method. The principle is that if you breed a Pokemon that you caught with a Pokemon from another country, the chances of their offspring being shiny are much higher.
If you want to rebuild you team out of shinies, I'd GTS an opposite gendered version of your party from a different country and start breeding away (assuming you aren't much of a stickler for breeding super competitively viable Pokemon)

From what I can tell, most people like gen 3 pokemon but hate the region design itself because it requires you to go through vast stretches of water with little pokemon variety to continue through the game.
There's also a lot of controversy about the OST, which is where the WATER TRUMPETS joke comes from, but don't take that to be a definitive opinion.
A lot of the general dislike seems to come not from the game itself, but because of the generalization that people touting it as the "best game" are young whippersnappers who played RSE as their first pokemon game. While there's a grain of truth behind that statement, it's at heart a generalization and can't be taken as definitive either.

In competitive, IVs aren't necessarily everything. I play just fine without perfect IVs. But they do matter, and they can be the deciding factor in a game.
