Back when I was in college, I'd take jobs tutoring at elementary schools for teaching experience. This was around the time D/P/Pt was released. I'd get challenged by the elementary students ALL the time. I became a bit of legend to some of them because I never lost (I had EV trained Pokemon). I even started teaching them about EV training and IV stats and stuff.
Man I miss those days. I do have one of my 8th grade students who I'm supposed to be battling before Thanksgiving break. Claims he's pretty good, and he's a smart kid, so it should be interesting. When I said I was IV breeding for stats, he said "yea, I heard it's easier for this game", so he may actually know what he's doing. I also have a feeling he browses 4Chan a lot because he always casually mentions memes and shit.

I'm having my first few games of Showdown against a friend. I'm a /tg/er, play plenty of tabletop games, play Magic, play Go. It's still insane to find out that Breloom heals from toxic, or that the Normal-type mon that you just switched against can pull out ice if it has to.
A casual player might as well just keep firing at the other mon. If they guess wrong while switching, whatever they switch into could get hit by something super-effective and they literally wouldn't know how.

Reading these stories I feel like I got it good. My best friend and I share most our thoughts and we love pokemon. Every morning I wake up and train my pokemon andbi always see him online and we end up hooking each other up with pokemon we haven't bothered to go looking for. The farthest he's gone is knowing about ev training. I'm going to give him a full blown lesson about breeding this tues. Going to teach him about iv, ev, and hp breeding. Feels good to have a friend irl who I can talk about this with
