Glad you asked! They're extremely rare variations of pokemon with different color pallets. There's about a 1/8000 chance of encountering them in the wild randomly without any RNG manipulation or methods that increase your chance of encountering one, so it isn't uncommon for some players to have never seen one before despite having played one or more games.
>1/8000 is too high! How do I get one easily?
The most common methods are the Masuda Method, Shiny Fishing, and PokeRadar Chaining, however there seems to be a higher chance of finding shinies in the Friend Safari as well. The three aforementioned methods are covered in the guides section in OP.
>What's the Masuda Method?
Named after Junichi Masuda, one of Diamond/Pearl's developers, programmed a little something special into the games that increases the shiny rate when breeding under certain conditions. Simply, a pokemon traded from a foreign country should be breeded with a pokemon from your cartridge. This increases the rate of an egg containing a shiny by 4x in DPPt (1/2048), and 5x in prior games (1/1638). See the guide in OP for more details.
>What's a shiny charm?
A key item in Gen V that increases your chances of finding a shiny. 1/2730 in the wild, and 1/1024 when using the Masuda Method. It cannot be traded through games.
>Is the shiny rate higher in the Friend Safari?
The majority of /vp/ thinks that this is true, but there hasn't been a datamine of the X/Y ROMs so nobody can say for sure. The rate appears to be on par with the Masuda Method's probability of 1/1638. It should be noted that you aren't allowed to use the Pokeradar in the friend safari, so chaining isn't an option there.

See the GFShinyGuide link in OP. While far easier to find and catch than with the other methods, the pool of available pokemon attainable from fishing is small, and because they much easier to catch, they aren't valued as high as other non-fishable shiny pokemon. Don't fret, you can usually throw a fishing shiny up on the GTS and get most any non-shiny pokemon for it including legendaries if some poor shmuck who doesn't know their worth falls for it. No hard shiny to normal fish ratios yet, but a rough estimate brings it around 1/200 at maximum probability. It should be noted that the mechanics of shiny fishing aren't entirely understood
>What is chaining?
When using the Pokeradar under extremely certain circumstances, one can increase their probability of encountering a shiny in grass patches. This is the more tricky method of the three, as it requires that you follow certain rules in order not to break your "chain" or "streak". The higher your chain, the more likely it is that you'll encounter a shiny. It should be noted that you cannot use the Pokeradar in the friend safari, but this is made up for by the (supposedly) higher shiny rates in the safari. See the guide in OP for more details.

I was initially looking for a shiny Seviper, hoping to maybe get a shiny Whirlipede while I was looking in a safari that had both, didn't care about the ability or anything. 3 non-speed boost Whirlipedes and 0 Sevipers later I think I'm going to stay here until I get a speed boost one, they're taunting me. Let's hope this quest doesn't take weeks.

I found two Garbodors before any Whirlipede, those were in 6 hour intervals. The Three Whirlipedes were in a space of only about 4 hours though, so just over an hour for each one. So the time can vary quite a lot.

I used an Action Replay a while back on my old copy of Pokemon Platinum to get an Eevee (Wild Pokemon Generator, or some such shit) and used the chain system to get a shiny.
Too bad I sold the game, was saving the shiny for Gen 6...

Took me 3 days to find a Spritzee, whilst hunting for Kirlia. Easily 20+ hours. Still no Kirlia afer 60+ hours.

At least I found a Ditto, though. That took around 20 hours, and I found a Loudred as my second encounter after that normal zone. But the Shiny Imposter hunt continues.

So can the Legendary Birds be encountered Shiny?

I've heard mixed views on just WHEN it counts for them to be shiny.

Apparently they can be SR'ed at the cave for better IVs and Natures. Whereas some people say they need to be encountered shiny first time over in the wild.

So is one side of the argument lying? Or is it a mixture?

Tl;dr: Shiny Articuno, yay or nay?

i'm currently using the masuda method using a ditto from a foreign region and a pokemon i hatched from an egg in my game. the parents of the pokemon are the foreign ditto and a pokemon i caught in my game.

What is the maximum increased shiny rate on fishing chains? 0.5% as with pokeradar chains?
If so Dratini definitely shouldn't count as a 'fishing shiny', because its regular encounter rate by fishing is 1/20.
This puts it at a staggering 1 in 4000 encounter rate.
That's the encounter rate of a regular shiny encounter in gen 6.
Hell even MMing the fucker would be quicker.

My shortests successful chain was 15, got a golden magikarp.
My longest one was 74 for a blue Relicanth.
I've heard of anons chaining over a hundred pokemon before they got anything at all however.

But in Dec I will have gang of BW shinys that I can trade ... hopefully someone's willing to part ways with a Female Espurr/ female Mawile and Male Pyrour (I actually ran into a shiny Male Pyrour but traded him in a hasty deal without thinking about it. Just jerked my 3DS off and now I'm gonna MM for it ...I want the whole family. Male-Female-Baby!) for some of my flawlessly bred shinys.

Those and a Female Pumpkaboo/ Furfrou and a T-Rex are the only other shinys I REALLY want that I don't have.
