Glad you asked! They're extremely rare variations of pokemon with different color pallets. There's about a 1/8000 chance of encountering them in the wild randomly without any RNG manipulation or methods that increase your chance of encountering one, so it isn't uncommon for some players to have never seen one before despite having played one or more games.
>1/8000 is too high! How do I get one easily?
The most common methods are the Masuda Method, Shiny Fishing, and PokeRadar Chaining, however there seems to be a higher chance of finding shinies in the Friend Safari as well. The three aforementioned methods are covered in the guides section in OP.
>What's the Masuda Method?
Named after Junichi Masuda, one of Diamond/Pearl's developers, programmed a little something special into the games that increases the shiny rate when breeding under certain conditions. Simply, a pokemon traded from a foreign country should be breeded with a pokemon from your cartridge. This increases the rate of an egg containing a shiny by 4x in DPPt (1/2048), and 5x in prior games (1/1638). See the guide in OP for more details.
>What's a shiny charm?
A key item in Gen V that increases your chances of finding a shiny. 1/2730 in the wild, and 1/1024 when using the Masuda Method. It cannot be traded through games.
>Is the shiny rate higher in the Friend Safari?
The majority of /vp/ thinks that this is true, but there hasn't been a datamine of the X/Y ROMs so nobody can say for sure. The rate appears to be on par with the Masuda Method's probability of 1/1638. It should be noted that you aren't allowed to use the Pokeradar in the friend safari, so chaining isn't an option there.

See the GFShinyGuide link in OP. While far easier to find and catch than with the other methods, the pool of available pokemon attainable from fishing is small, and because they much easier to catch, they aren't valued as high as other non-fishable shiny pokemon. Don't fret, you can usually throw a fishing shiny up on the GTS and get most any non-shiny pokemon for it including legendaries if some poor shmuck who doesn't know their worth falls for it. No hard shiny to normal fish ratios yet, but a rough estimate brings it around 1/200 at maximum probability. It should be noted that the mechanics of shiny fishing aren't entirely understood
>What is chaining?
When using the Pokeradar under extremely certain circumstances, one can increase their probability of encountering a shiny in grass patches. This is the more tricky method of the three, as it requires that you follow certain rules in order not to break your "chain" or "streak". The higher your chain, the more likely it is that you'll encounter a shiny. It should be noted that you cannot use the Pokeradar in the friend safari, but this is made up for by the (supposedly) higher shiny rates in the safari. See the guide in OP for more details.

Huge Power isn't a Hidden Ability. You can change it with the capsule. Marill is one of the safest shinies to MM for this gen, given that you can always give it the usable ability AND wild Azurill will always have at least 3 perfect IVs, since they're in the Undiscovered egg group, meaning you can get semiperfect foreign breeding fodder off of the GTS rather easily, since they're common as fuck.

I took a break for some other shinies and got incredibly lucky with two of my favorites, but now I've gone back and I've probably done 50+ boxes in total with nothing.

Yeah, Espeon is pretty cool looking. This is actually the first Eevee pokemon I've raised though. I HAD raised an Aurorus, and whilst it is a beautiful Pokemon with a great cry, it's shit. I'm really sad about it, but it's terrible. It's weak to everything and died twice whilst I was training it. I didn't find the T-Rex much better.

I just take as many eggs as I can and put the hatchlings away as they hatch. Once I hit like 6 boxes, I release them all. Kinda tedious.

Alright, doing a bit of science in the friend safari.
I've caught 3 shinies there within a day, and recorded data from the last two.

>First encounter, unrecorded
>Second encounter, 177th
>Third encounter, 222nd

I've timed it, and my encounter rate is around 150 per hour.
After I get some more data points (shinies) I'm going to try with Illuminate, both as a lead, and with 4 in the back.

I should also note, these are all separate. I didn't get to 177, catch a shiny, then kept going on to 222.

And while the first was unrecorded, I'm certain it took less time than the second encounter.

I really don't either. I pretty much only search in friend safaris where the person is online. I'll find a shiny, and in the excitement forget to check if the owner is still online. Sometimes they aren't online anymore. BUT it might be that the owner simply disconnected in the five or ten minutes after I had caught the shiny.

I've seen posts from people who would say that the owner was online when they were getting into the Safari, then sometimes went offline, sometimes not. When I was searching for HA pokes it also only mattered when I was entering the Safari. Looks like the game checks it once, in the beggining, then stays like this.

It's just a theory though.

I got a Shiny Ponyta within a few hours of running around in the Safari of a friend who doesn't even have Pokémon and wasn't online in general let alone on said game they don't have. Same with a Shuppet, although that took longer.

I really don't think it matters. Maybe it does, maybe I've been lucky, but I'm definitely leaning towards it doesn't matter.

I had the craziest luck last night and this morning.
So last night I've decided to take a little break from IV breeding Deinos so I went to a water type friend safari to try my luck for a shiny Frogadier (because shiny Greninja is smexy).

I keep trying, nothing. Then BAM, shiny female Panpour. Not the shiny I was looking for but ok, still a shiny. I keep looking, hours later BAM another shiny Panpour, male this time. FML. Oh well, just a little more before I go to sleep... only to bump into yet another male shiny Panpour. FFFUUU-- I save and close the game, go to sleep.

I wake up, start working and while I wait for some e-mails, I open up the game to try my luck a bit again. 3 encounters later shiny Frogadier AWW YESSS!! I pick a high lvl poke from my box and rush it and the Frogadier to the Victory road to get him the 6 lvls it needs to evolve... BAM shiny Conkeldurr... :T Oookay... a few encounters later BAM shiny Druddigon.

6 shinies within half a day, nothing much happened since then apart from finally hatching a perfect Deino with 6 perfect IVs. Should probably get a lottery ticket...
